Mural City

Celebrate another sick community work

Billboards always suck. So do many large-scale print ads. That’s why the recently completed Knowledge Breaks Down Barriers Created by Ignorance mural is such a badass and welcome addition to the local community.

East L.A.-based creative type Raul Gonzalez, along with youth from the Garfield neighborhood in central Phoenix, created the stirring piece that spans a 6-foot-tall by 95-foot-wide wall located between 1100 and 1200 Roosevelt Street. The design depicts many heroes of the Latino(a) experience, such as Salvador Reza, as well as pensive, motivational, and positivity-pumping scenes.

“More times than not we are exposed to negative imagery with mass alcohol advertisements billboards depicting youth in an unfavorable manner, says Ginae Klasek, community prevention specialist and community activist for Chicanos por la Causa. “The mural was designed and created by youth and depicts what is important to them, which includes family, culture, justice, and education.”

The masterpiece will be celebrated during a Mural Unveiling Party. The shindig is scheduled to take place between Roosevelt at 11th and 12th streets.
