Extreme Makeover

See what a little bond money can do

You don’t have to pardon the dust any longer at 222 East Monroe Street. That’s because the dramatic changes to Herberger Theater Center are finally done.

In 2006, voters approved a bond that would upgrade the 21-year-old downtown Phoenix performing arts venue. As a result, construction crews didn’t just apply a fresh coat of paint. They pretty much went to town.

The $16.6 million revamping includes a partial-exterior facelift to the sides facing Monroe and Van Buren streets. There’s also a feng shui-ing of the joint’s interior, ranging from a redesigned lobby and green-conscious energy applications to more accessible theaters to beefed-up concessions and box-office capabilities.

Check out the upgraded digs during the Herberger Theater Festival of the Arts, which goes off with tours, performances, live music, film shorts, and grub.
