Preston Singletary blows some glass our way

Art fans worried that Tlingit mythology would remain under-represented this season can breathe a sigh of relief: Preston Singletary has a new show at the Heard Museum entitled, “Echoes, Fire, and Shadows,” that brings together the symbols, patterns, and legends of his Tlingit heritage with the work of the Studio Glass movement. The result, according to early reports, is a distinctive and powerful body of work.

Singletary is known internationally for his glass work, which for nearly two decades has often incorporated prominent artistic influences of traditional American Indian design. This new exhibit comes to the Heard from the Museum of Glass in Tacoma, Washington; this is its only stop in the Southwest.

It’s enhanced by original music and video and features a signature piece called Clan House, a 16-by-10-foot cast-glass triptych based in both Tlingit architecture and art that features a pair of bas-relief house posts framing an elaborately ornamented screen.

Mondays-Sundays. Starts: Oct. 18. Continues through Feb. 6, 2010
