Jon Hulburd's a Turncoat, and Terry Goddard's Weak. So Who Are This Year's Democratic Role Models?

LITTLE JON

I was raised in North Carolina as a Southern, yellow-dog Democrat, meaning that my FDR-lovin' grandfather would normally rise from the grave and put his ghostly hand bone to my cranium if I even so much as suggested that folks shouldn't vote donkey.

However, after communing with him in the great beyond through my strip mall psychic, my Tar Heel granddaddy's granting me a pass. That is, after I told him all about this "Democrat" named Jon Hulburd.

See, my address puts me square in John Shadegg's soon-to-be-former Congressional District 3, which's currently getting fought over by two rich dudes: Hulburd, the pseudo-Dem who likes dipping into his wife's mega-buck S.C. Johnson-padded bank account for Drano money to spend on his campaign; and Republican Ben "Tater Tot" Quayle, a chip off the old spud, ex-Veep Dan Quayle. (See our October 14 cover story on the race.)

But as somebody who returned home to Raleigh one Christmas to dance on segregationist U.S. Senator Jesse Helms' grave, I can tell you this: If Hulburd were running against the reincarnation of Rasputin in Republican form, I'd be tempted vote for the mad monk's doppelganger.

I could stand Hulburd's insincere outrage over junior Quayle's scribbling for Nik Richie's TheDirty.com under the pseudonym of Boogie Nights character Brock Landers if Hulburd actually tried to stand for some Democratic principles.

But he stands for none that I can sniff out. He unequivocally supports Arizona Senate Bill 1070, has been unwilling to roll back George W. Bush's tax cuts for the über-rich, and, worst of all, would not vote for the DREAM Act, the proposed legislation that would grant children of undocumented immigrants — brought here when they were tykes — the chance to legalize their status if they go to college or serve in the military.

Hulburd's stance on the DREAM Act really sticks in my craw. If a Democratic candidate cannot support the DREAM Act, then why be a Democrat?

Some Dems tell me that Hulburd's faking it, that he has to veer right to beat Quayle and put a D in CD3. After all, the guy once worked for former U.S. senator from Colorado Gary Hart, he of "Monkey Business" infamy. So could Hulburd be that bad? Plus, the donkey-kongs need every Dem they can get, with the U.S. House up for grabs and nearly every Democrat-held congressional seat in Arizona in play.

Hey, I hear y'all. I agree that the lesser of two evils is less evil. Yeah, Quayle's a schmuck. His ad claiming, "Barack Obama is the worst president in history," is one the dumbest political stunts I've seen on the boob tube in any political season. But all Hulburd's got to distinguish himself from Quayle is that he's not Brock Landers, and that ain't good enough.

One last note: Quayle's online, pseudonymic bawdiness is, in this day and age, really no big deal. For all those politically correct Dems crying that Quayle doesn't "respect women" because of his Dirty postings, spare me the drama. You're the same crowd that was so quick to come to the defense of former President Bill Clinton during the Monica Lewinsky scandal.

DEMOCRATIC DESERT

I think we can all agree that Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard would make a far better governor than Jan "Had Did" Brewer. Indeed, I've always liked Goddard on a personal level. The man is genteel, highly intelligent, and well spoken. Which makes his lack of fight all that more frustrating.

Early on, Goddard seemed to think — or his consultants and campaign advisers plucked from former Governor Janet Napolitano's ranks so wrongly informed him — that he would shimmy into the Governor's Office this year as the rightful heir to Napolitano's middling, do-nothing legacy.

And before the hapless Brewer signed neo-Nazi-hugging state Senator Russell Pearce's SB 1070, this pipe dream may have been grounded in fact. With our state mired in budget woes and ranked as the poorest in the nation (save Mississippi) during Brewer's accidental and ineffectual stewardship, Goddard had his white horse primed to ride to our (ahem) rescue.

But Goddard waited too long to engage Brewer. He should have been on the attack in January, not picking out the color scheme for his new office on the ninth floor of the Capitol's Executive Tower. And as Pearce's 1070 began to blacken the political landscape, Goddard should have led a vigorous charge against it.

Instead, as with most Dems, he did not recognize the threat that SB 1070 posed. After Brewer signed the ill-fated breathing-while-brown legislation, he vowed to defend it, even though the law was destined to be enjoined in federal court. Plus Brewer wasn't about to let her rival co-opt her key to re-election. She hired law firm Snell & Wilmer to protect 1070, and Goddard was left with bupkis.

Goddard's impotence on 1070 mirrors the Dems general impotence on the issue of immigration, both in this state and nationally.

As the 1070 beast slouched toward its hideous birth, and as the Pearce-led Republicans ramped up their nativist, Mexican-bashing rhetoric, the Dems were unorganized and clueless. They should have been opposing 1070 in the state House and Senate with every legislative trick they could conjure. Instead, they were running scared, offering token opposition.

Memo to Steve: "Democratic Role Models" -- Simply three words that do not go together.

The American people think it bad now JUST WAIT they haven't seen anything yet. The people of Arizona have no right to complaint next year they voted all the children in, Quayle and Swertker who's father or gran father was a senator from Penna. These two know nothing else so they will be in office forever way to go Arizona

Like most fervent democrats, you just don't won't accept that illegal immigration is bad for the country. Period. You can't even use the word, "illegal" I notice. It just doesn't blend in your politically correct lexicon. Please try to understand that illegal immigration, (not, LEGAL immigration), is not a victimless crime. It tears the bottom end out of wages in construction and in anything else where illegals find employment. But also understand that I don't really blame the illegals for trying to better their lot. Who could? I blame the people that are willing to hire them at depressed wages, thereby creating a slave class and destroying wage integrity for millions of Americans desperately seeking work in the trades during this catastrophic building slow-down. Most of all though, I blame holier-than-thou journalists and politicians who wrongly imagine that the illegal issue lends their party some sort of moral high ground. -Even as illegals erode the prospertiy and opportunities of the working class. Hulburd merely accepts a reality that you don't: Illegal immigration is not good for the country. If you want to berate him, pick out different issues. And if Brewer is a moron, she understands that the independents who voted for Obama two years back, are totally against illegal immigration. It is a simple political reality. So I guess as dumb as she is, she's smarter than you or your boy Goddard. Pull your head out of the sixties, or wherever you have it stuck. Illegal immigration is not a race issue. It is simply this: There is a reasonable limit to how many totally destiture human beings we can pull up from the morass without having them pull us down. However grim and prosaic this truth is, it is, at least, the truth Another truth is this: As long as democrats live in denial on this issue, they will continue to lose elections.

gopsaretards
gopsaretards

Wow so when the boom was on and unemployment was 2% and constructioin companies could not find workers and housing was driving the boom it was illegals who made up the worker gap. In fact without them there would have been no housing boom. Now that there is a recession there are plenty of workers just no one to buy the houses. So are you saying that illegals are responsible for the boom? And I defy you ti find leagal residents to go pick apples for minimum, wage. Oh yeah, you could pay more then apples wold be $3 a piece. Like most republicans you over simplify everything, weave the flag, invoke god everywhere as if that somehow makes a difference and frankly live in denial about how thing "actually work" in the biog boy world. Seems oyu like other republicans don't ask too many questions when money is flowing in your pockets then when things get bad you need to "blame" someone else besides your self. Yeah, like the Nazis did, I said it.....

Nathan V
Nathan V

So, we should be thankful for the "illegal" aliens for picking up the slack of work during the housing boom? Sure, Thank you, for escalating the boom, which directly led to the housing crash, fueling the total economy melt down. Thank you so much

larryboning

Try to quit thinking in stereotypes. I am not a nazi. I am, in fact a registered democrat who voted for Obama. In spite of my disagreement with his stance on illegals, I appreciate his political courage in taking on health care andsuppot many of his foreign policy ideas. I have been taking a dismal view of the numbers of illegals for twenty years. The "boom" served no good purpose. One of the negative results were the number of illegals it pulled into the Arizona construction industry. I made no money in the boom, I lost little in the bust. Finally: Use spell-check. You will appear more intelligent.

VOTE 4 SHERWOOD!!! Sherwood means a better tommorow! I met this guy real nice person and outstanding. All russel pierce has talked about is 1070 he hasnt said anything about fixing the economic downturn mesa is facing. Sherwood covers all important points education, economy, and immigration. He understands that there is alot of red tape to getting legal here for those who do good to this country thats why they are here illegally. Unless you want to be jobless living on the street in a couple years vote for pierce if not VOTE SHERWOOD!!!! GO SHERWOOD!!!!

Good for Hulburd for supporting Arizona SB1070 and apposing the DREAM-Act One beheading is one to many. Violent crimes are down maybe due to the econmy and the illegials scurrying elsewhere, but thieft of all kinds thrive identity, car, jobs, property you name it. Just because victims of human smuggling do not speak up doesn't mean a crime did not occur. God I wish England, Austrila, Franch or other European Countries would have an open border policy so I can flee to a better place. SEIU and other Unions that support illigial workers and deteriation of working American wages need to be banned, unions contribute heavily to Dems as do hate group LaRaza if this is what Dems stand for I will stay Independant thank you..

As a lifelong registered Democrat as well as a naturalized citizen of the United States, I see nothing wrong in supporting (the idea behind) SB 1070, nor do I find fault with being against the DREAM act. I do disagree with not allowing the Bush tax cuts to sunset for the wealthy. But, my God man! Quayle? Are you out of your frickin' mind?

Randy_blackmer
Randy_blackmer

So you think we should have Ben represent us the people. And for Gods sakes, a demented Govenor should stay in office???

Winks_lbj
Winks_lbj

I do not disagree with most of your comments, but I cannot imagine how a vote for Quayle is better than a vote for Hulburd, no matter what your political stripes. Let's leave the whole Brock Landers misoginist thing out of the discussion for now, and let's assume that Hulburd is running a little to the right in order to capture the independent voters in District 3, which by last count amount to about 30% of the electorate (with 45% R and 25% D). A Democrat is AZ really has no other option if he or she hopes to compete. And while I am on the subject of Democrats in AZ, what would inspire a better candidate than Hulburd to run? Certainly not the hopes of being able to change the rabid conservatism that has taken over our state.

As for me, I would rather have a moderate Democrat take the seat than a guy who really has no political bona fides whatsoever. He calls himself a Republican because that is what he has been fed by his daddy and the other Washington insiders with whom he has lived his life - a life NOT lived in AZ District 3. Ben Quayle has never even voted in an election in the state of AZ. He bought his house and his wife (oops, I mean married his wife) less than a year ago. He stabbed a long time family friend in the back to win the primary.

As much as I may disagree with Hulburd's apparent conservative approach to certain issues, overall, he is a much better choice than Quayle.

Same with Goddard. The main reason he has shown restraint in his dealings with crazy Jan (aside from being a gentleman, which I guess means you are less than a real man these days), is because he'd be accused of bullying a woman otherwise.

We are Democrats. We don't stomp on our opponents' heads. We will not turn into our enemies.

Leonard Clark
Leonard Clark

I just love the self rationalization that goes on with some of my democratic friends who mean well and think they can call a democrat such as Hulburd or Goddard a "moderate" when they support a clearly racist law from the pre Civil Rights era and in Hulburd's case openly opposes the "ream Act" and the Bush era tax cuts for millionaires. The statement: " I'd rather have a moderate democrat in there" is not logical especially when it comes to Hulburd (a supposed democrat) because Hulburd and any democrat who supports a clearly racist law like s.b. 1070 is not a moderate on the contrary, this is either a racist politician or someone saying what they need to say (supporting evil) to get themself elected to Congress for pure lust of power, wealth or both.

I was in the Arizona Republic Editorial board room as the officially endorsed Green party candidate for Az. cong. dist.#3 that day and sat right next to (supposed democrat) John Hulburd when he was asked by the journalist of the Arizona Republic Editorial Board whether he was just saying that he supported s.b. 1070 to get elected in a Republican district or whether he really as a person personally believed in and supported s.b. 1070 and he responded: "yes". Now, I will take Hulburd at his word and believe him when he says he as a person and human being personally supports a racist law such as s.b. 1070 which has tremondously hurt our state's image and reputation. In addition, I was there when Hulburd further clarified that not only did he support the racist s.b. 1070 but that he in addition did NOT support the changes to the racist s.b. 1070 law made by federal judge Bolton that at least helped lessen its damage in some way.

A democrat or any politician who supports such an evil, filthy and racist law sponsored by an evil and filthy racist politician like Republican Rusell Pierce is in a way worse than the very fascist monster that we are non-violently fighting. What if the colonists who founded the United States of America had said: Hey, we probably can't win this thing and instead of going down to total defeat we'll make a deal with the king of England and let him install Benedict Arnold as our colonial imperial leader. He's moderate and yes he did betray our ideals and literally fought on the battle field against us but hey...he's better than the alternative. It's much better to have a moderate monarchial leader who is a quasi representative of the King than having the king himself rule over us but hey, that's life, that's compromise."

The above scenario is not far fetched because the king of England did try to make deals to divide us when we were fighting him and England for our freedom and now...over two hundred and thirty some odd years later...we have the "Joe Lieberman" democrat, the Benedict Arnold's of democracy and Progressivism today working hand in hand with fascist right wing republicans (starting with the president himself) that work to enrich themselves either because they lust for power, for wealth or both. We are constantly told: Hey, I'm just accepting the lesser of two evils and you should too because if you don't the bad guys are going to win."All throughout history we've faced off with well meaning and so well meaning citizens who have told us to compromise, for example Abraham Lincoln was told he could compromise with the South after the Civil War had begun and ask for peace but he didn't. Presidents Roosevelt and Truman could have compromised and instead of insisting on something else other than "unconditional surrender" they could have made deals with Nazi Germany but thank goodness they didn't.You see, there is a difference between the two terms: "selling out" and "compromise" selling out is when you sell out your principles and doing anything it takes to get what you want, this has been a constant symptom of leaders throughout history, a quick example would be Napoleon, Caesar or South American dictators. This is something George Washington could have done when he was offered the presidency for life which in effect would have made him the very thing that we had fought a revolution against but again...thank goodness he didn't. Well today, there are very few cases where we can say: Well, thank goodness that democratic politician didn't sell out or surrender and that...is not only a tragedy for our democracy but a stunning wake up call as to the quality of leadership that is now left ruling my former democratic party. Now, compromise is bending just enough without "selling out" your cause to get the best results toward your cause. "Surrender" is even worse and in the case of democratic elites and millionaires like (supposed democrat) John Hulburd and Terry Goddard, when they openly Support evil and racist legislation to the people of Arizona not only are they "selling out" they are surrendering the cause of love and humanity (Progressivism) that we thought we could entrust them with as supposed leaders. This is a terrible tragedy when men who are good bow down before evil and then...rationalize it before their supporters and the people of this state and nation thereby causing their supporters to be blinded and help take our democracy right over a cliff.Democracy is not about selling out to the ideas of hate, racism and tryanny (fascism and communism) it is about the ideals of love, humanity and equality being strengthened through peaceful discourse by the strong stands and yes... compromises of their leaders, this is what we call the wisdom of democracy and which now seems to have gone missing for the last 45 years of country. Anti-thetical to the ideals of our democracy are the two twin heads of a monster Medusa which we call: "selling out" and "surrender".

Now, too many politicians within my former democratic party have either forgotten the above precepts of our democracy or worse knowingly shunned them to gain power at any cost. And now...this is what we are faced with: Democratis In Name Only like, Joe Lieberman, Max Baucus, Bill Clinton, John Hulburd and Terry Goddard. If this Clinton philosophy continues like it has for the last decade and a half there will soon be no true and actual Progressivism left in my former democratic party, which is really a shame and great tragedy, for even though I am a proud member of the Green party, I know that if sell out leaders like the democratic elite leaders I mention above get their way their will be no great ending battle that destroys Democracy and Progressivism in our country, it will be a long slow continous death by "a thousand small knife cuts" to the democratic heart of our country.John Hulburd and Terry Goddard support evil in the name of fighting it and they along with the Joe Lieberman's of their party...not the republican, fascist Tea party leaders who put their "hate" out there for all to see will be the greatest danger because it will be they who open the fortress doors of our democracy and let evil people like Sarah Palin, O'Donell, Russel Pierce and Jan Brewer

walk right in. Abraham Lincoln once said to the effect during a speech in 1838 that no foreign Napoleon would successfully invade our country just to drink out of the Mississippi river rather it would be a domestic Napoleon. Now, in conclusion...it is our duty to elect Progressive and democratic Green party leaders that will not sell us out or surrender our country to hate and racism like Democrats such as John Hulburd or Terry Goddard for what's worse having a traitor government like Vichy quasi-fascists French democrats or the actual fascists themselves? Give me the tyrant over the traitor for at least the tryrant tells me he is evil rather than traitor who pust a knife in the back of our democracy when he thinks we are not looking!

You seem like an honorable and intelligent person, so I am sure you understand two basic truths about the upcoming election and particularly AZ District 3:

1) A Green Party candidate will nver win; and

2) There is more at stake than one seat or one law (on which I strongly disagree with about 62% of America's viewpoint).

Given these two truths, I will continue my well-meaning rationalization and vote for Hulburd. Also, you are mistaken in lumping Goddard in with the pro-1070 camp.

Leonardclark

Thank you. You seem to be a coherent person but the fact is Terry Goddard is quoted as supporting s.b. 1070: Not only will I enforce s.b. 1070, I will strongly enforce it.I will not support any politician who supports hate and racism by supporting s.b. 1070, even if that politician has no endorsed Green party opponent running against them. Unfortunately while democrats Congressman Grijalva, Candidate Sherwood and Rotellini show the courage of their convictions and standing up for the U.S. constitution and the laws of humanity. Your man Hulburd has lost and at the end of the day and the day after he will have made enemies not only of the right for pretending to be a republican but of the left as well for pretending to be a democrat and a Progressive. Mr. Lemons I am a hispanic born and bred in Texas. Do you have any suggestions on how to start a "mexican Tea Party" to go after jokes like Sarah Palin.Seriously people look up to a lady like that only in America and to go after that "fat" tub of lard, Russell Pearce I bet he sits home eating "mexican babies" babies for dinner. You are right when you say us :"latinos" are afraid to go out there and speak our mind. I think with someone leading the way we would succeed in getting rid of all this good for nothing representatives. How do we start a Tea Party. I will travel and talk my talk all over the republicans if given the chance. This state is a Joke and Im tired of the way they treat Mexicans. I am Hispanic with brown skin and Im tired of being asked,"you as a Mexican how do you feel about SB1070". My answer is always the same, "I AM AN AMERICAN' born and raised in the USA they assume automatically that I am from Mexico. I few years back I was stopped by a "cop" who had 2 choices to stop 2 young "white" kids driving next to me with their car reaking of Pot or me a "brown mexican" that was on his way too church and you guessed right I was the one stopped. After confronting him with this he backed down and had the audicity to tell me that he thought my car smelled like Pot. LOL..What do you think of that Jan"dum*A**" Brewer but no one is racial profiling according to her, back then it was not an issue and it was already happening. Thanks Mr. Lemons for writing this week's article. in the Phoenix New Times it spoke Truth To Power on how our democratic leaders have sold out the Prog. values this party once stood for ! I know that the press won't mention me as an official candidate for Arizona Congressional district #3 and as an endorsed Green party candidate but again let me state right here and now that just because I am poor and have hardly no money in my campaign does not mean that I am any less than these two millionaire candidates. Unlike them I actually served my country and watched as comrades die so that they could run their million dollar campaigns. Unlike Quayle and more shockingly the so called Democrat Hulburd who supports s.b. 1070 and the extension of the Bush era tax cuts for millionaires while also opposing the Dream Act,I Leonard Clark state here to you and all those who are voting in this upcoming election that as the Green party candidate for Arizona Congressional district #3 strongly OPPOSE the racist s.b. 1070, Bush Era tax cuts for millionaires and strongly SUPPORT the Dream Act ! Further, unlike Quayle and Hulburd who like president Obama publicly oppose Same Sex Marriage I SUPPORT it because it is none of my business who a man or a woman wants to marry !I hope that despite the media blackout of my campaign which includes the heavy handed censoring by KJZZ radio and KAET public television that you will vote for me on November 2nd, 2010. I finish with the unpayable gratitude of one who served this country and witnessed acts of heroism by his comrades in the U.S. Armed Forces who were injured and even died for my right and the right of the two millionaires running in Arizona congressional district # 3 to be able to run for elective office, in this tenacious democracy.Leonard ClarkArizona Endorsed Green Party Candidatefor Arizona Congressional district # 310-28-10Leonard Clark, (The Damn Liberal)

I'm always amused at how perplexed you sanctimonious Democrats get when one of your own has the nerve to actually let what he’s thinking supersede his rhetoric.

"Hulburd's stance on the DREAM Act really sticks in my craw. If a Democratic candidate cannot support the DREAM Act, then why be a Democrat?"

Why be a Democrat? Really? Hey Stephen, he’s just following that good ol’ southern Democratic tradition of white supremacy. Remember which party instituted the Jim Crow laws? I will never understand why minorities align themselves with the Democrats. They’re the party of the Jim Crow laws and poll taxes and any other tactic they could devise to deny non-whites the vote. Yet somehow the Democrats have managed erase all that history from the minds of black leaders…I just don’t get it. Or maybe it’s the money.

I think it's a bit late to be ragging on Hulburd, even though the insight is certainly valid. An added note on Hulburd is that he and his wife both contributed the maximum allowable amounts for both the primary and general election campaigns to Rodney Glassman. That's problematic, in my mind.

Excellent recognition of Rotellini who is one very sharp candidate with very sharp elbows that she's not afraid to jab with. And ya gotta love Cherny for making it more clear to voters why it's important to make a wise choice for state treasurer.

And Sherwood's task certainly is not impossible. Republican's have lost in the East Valley when voters got fed up with the shenanigans of someone who got too big for his britches. I'm thinking of Jeff Groscost. I hope he rests in peace, but I was glad when Jay Blanchard beat him in the race for state senate. There's no question that hubris courses through Pearce's veins and that makes him ripe indeed for defeat.

Steve, I can only hope you're right about Sherwood possibly bonking pearce. I don't live in the district but sure wish I could vote against pearce. Sherwood just might pull it off.

I met Ms. Rotellini at a gathering and we donated to her cause. I think she is going to whack Mr. Horne, as he whacked cracky andy.
