Junip

In September, Jose Gonzalez and his chillwave band, Junip, released Fields, their first full-length record since forming over a decade ago. “It feels new for me, even though we started playing 12 years ago,” Gonzalez told me earlier this year. The songs on Fields have all the right Gonzalez hallmarks - shadowy synths and percussions backing his classical nylon-string guitar and his remarkably tender and lucid vocals. But Gonzalez says he finds Junip’s rhythmic sound to be much different than that of his acclaimed solo work, and that, additionally, he enjoys the freedom that playing with his bandmates (Elias Araya on the drums, Tobias Winterkorn on the organ and synth) gives him: “I don’t think too much about trying to impress people with my guitar.”
