Author examines botched Buddhist Temple Massacre investigation
They say the innocent need not fear the law, but tell that to the three Tucson juveniles bullied into falsely confessing to the August 1991 Wat Promkunaram Buddhist temple slayings after a fourth "friend" implicated them in his own false confession; or to alleged Phoenix triggerman Jonathan Doody, who confessed after 13 hours of interrogation and improper Mirandizing.
This tortuous fiasco of waived rights, false confessions, and ignored evidence are the subjects of Gary Stuart’s Innocent Until Interrogated: The True Story of the Buddhist Temple Massacre and the Tucson Four. Maricopa County ultimately paid the Tucson Four a $2.8 million mea culpa; the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals overturned Doody’s conviction; then-Sheriff Tom Agnos’ career crumbled and Joe Arpaio’s juggernaut journey got underway.
Arizona State University Law School Dean Paul Schiff Berman will interview the author.
