Jubilant Psychs

Who says Cirque du Soleil is for sissies?

It’s Spanish for “joy,” but Alegría – one of Cirque du Soleil’s earlier shows, now in revival – is in fact a darker version of the intergalactic circuses the troupe has since been known for.

More About

The show is less jubilant than it is joyfully oppressive, with dark lighting and darker, more gothic music than other Cirque spectacles. The show’s harsh, angular design was first unveiled as the company’s tenth anniversary production, after which it toured the world for 15 long years, throwing flames and tossing oddly costumed little people into the air across the globe. Its score struck a chord with music fans, as well: The title song was a giant pop hit, and the Alegría soundtrack remains the best-selling Cirque du Soleil album to date.
