Soviet Reunion

Glendale CC hosts all things Russian

Can’t tell borscht from ukha? Think gorodki is a lesser-known cosmonaut? Still laughing along with Yakov Smirnoff? Maybe it’s time to brush up on Mother Russia.

Presented by Holy Archangels Orthodox Church and the Phoenix Russian Library Club, the Arizona Russian Festival will cram the culture of the largest land-area country in the world (spanning nine time zones) into a one-day, one-location celebration. Featuring live performances, including the Arizona Balalaika Orchestra and harpist Alla Yashneva, the event also boasts traditional food, works by Russian artists, workshops, games, video presentations on Orthodox icons and Russian folk music, handmade goods, and Russian sidecar motorcycles. There’s even a competition for best Russian folk costume.

Sat., Nov. 20, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., 2010
