Tutu Much

Nuts will be cracked

Don’t be confused. It’s not staged in Moscow, but in Phoenix. And it’s not taking place at the Dodge Theatre, because that venue has been renamed the Comerica Theatre (ack! Why?). Still, it’s the Moscow Ballet’s performance of The Nutcracker, one of a half-dozen Nutcrackers now in town, determined to make our Christmases merry and bright (and balletic).

Based on The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, a fairy tale by E.T.A. Hoffmann, this Tchaikovsky classic was first performed in Russia in 1892. The Moscow Ballet, a relatively new troupe (it was founded in 1993), travels the globe staging classics including Carmen and Sleeping Beauty; this is their greatest hit. Performed by master ballerinas and danseurs, Moscow Ballet’s The Nutcracker has been lauded as the perfect traditional translation of the story, which puts it ahead of the rest, in our book.
