Ask a Mexican on Hypocrisy and Pregnancy

I'm not Mexican (or from a Spanish-speaking country, for that matter), but I get mad when the gabachos in my town say that all Mexican girls do is take drugs and get pregnant, drop out of school, and end up on welfare. I know a lot of Mexican women who haven't done any of these things, who have gone to college, and who got high-paying jobs. And the thing that bothers me most is when gabacho girls do drugs or get pregnant, no one gets on their case. Everyone is willing to help them, and they're just referred to as victims of society. Why is it that if a Mexican girl gets pregnant, people just scoff at her and blame her Latino heritage, but if a gabacha girl gets pregnant, people automatically sympathize with her?
Annoyed with Gabacho Hypocrites

The same reason mentally deranged gabachos who go on murderous sprees get classified as "disturbed," while mentally deranged brown folks, whether Mexican or Muslim, get their killings attributed to race or religion. Same reason neo-Nazis get their idiocies dismissed as the mere ramblings of meth heads, while Chicano Studies majors get their discipline savaged as teachings on par with those of Goebbels. Same reason class divisions in this country don't exist, while class divisions in Mexico get attributed to our inherent Darwinian tendencies. I know I sound a bit whiny right now — or, rather, more so than usual — but you're right to be annoyed. As I continually argue, culture isn't the sole determinant of all the pathologies of an ethnic group or even the most important one, which leads me to . . .

I work in the education field and have a serious concern about the performance of Hispanic children in our school district. There seems to be a misguided approach to bring back bilingual education for Hispanic children. The poor performance of these children and other minority groups has been ongoing. The group of children that bucks this trend is Asian students. Now, there are exceptions to this general breakdown, but the numbers are undeniable. As I look at the ethnic breakdown at the major universities in California, these numbers are more shocking. As we hear more and more sound bites of how Hispanics/Latinos are the new force, where will they fall in the future? The educated will get better, and the future based on this point will go to the Asians. I want to get your opinion. Just want you to know that I am an American first, but of Hispanic ethnicity.
Not of the Asian Persuasion

Two separate issues here — the virtues versus detriments of bilingual education, and educational achievement of Mexicans vis-à-vis chinitos. I can cite stats that show bilingual education holds down Mexis or creates little Einsteins out of them, so will limit my remarks to note that most people who oppose bilingual education tend to lean right (like yourself. Another giveaway? Your insistence on labeling yourself an "American first" — duh. You're writing to me in English, aren't you?). If parents want their chamacos in dual immersion classes, why don't you let them have that option — you know, that whole parental choice thing? On the issue of chinito superiority — sure, a chingo more of them go on to higher education, but not all of them. The National Commission on Asian American and Pacific Island Research in Education published a 2010 report that found Cambodians, Hmongs, Laotians, and most Pacific Islander groups had the same abysmal college graduation rates as Latinos, rates that lagged far behind other Asian-American groups. But rather than dwell on culture, the report noted that many factors contributed to the low numbers, the same factors that affect Mexican students. I'm not offering excuses — far from it, this Mexican tries to speak at least once a month to high school students about the necessity of finishing la prepa and beyond — but I don't dwell on the achievement gap, and neither should you. If you care about Mexis and education, do something about it — don't whine that chinitos are better.

Good Mexican of the week! The obvious choice — Daniel Hernandez, Jr., the brave intern of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords who stood by her side while so many others would've fled. No other politicizing on my part, other than to note this is a reminder that American heroes come in all forms — and I've already said enough.

Asians are the "model minority" for a reason we assimilate to western standards and don't cry because people put stereotypes on our bad behavior. Sorry but stereotypes do come for a reason, Asians do tend to be more educated driven, and Latinos, I think everyone already knows.

STFU all you fucking white nazi sons of bitches should be glad theres mexicans are here, who the fuck does the degrating work no fucking white person is willing to do just to make some decent money. If all you fucking white people would live just ONE fucking day in Mexico you would understand why we come to the fucking racist supposedly "land of the free" just to make a little fucking bit of money to send to our families that are in need, not like your whit families that live the good fucking life.

Wow! Really? You're gonna sit here and tell "white" people to shut the fuck up. I'm a german american women and let me tell you. It took my family 7 years to get a green card. We worked hard and came here the RIGHT way. We didnt jump the border. I get that Mexico is bad right now, but so are alot of other places. Work isn't there for "white" or "mexican" right now. There isnt any work. If you don't like the laws here, leave!! Simple as that. If you're gonna live in a place, that you have no claim to and live off our government, then stop bitching. Go through the right channels and get a damn green card before you start bitching about our "Land of the free." Nothing in this life is free. And remember, we came here for a better life, stop bitching or go back!

" I'm a german american women"Where were you born?If in Germany to German parents then you are German. If in the US by German parents who are not on a diplomatic mission then you are American. If you are OLDer then 23 then you, by German Law, MUST have chosen your Citizenship, IF you are not 23 YET, then you will have to choose when you turn 23.

So what are you? A German or an American? By law in Germany you can not be both as an ADULT.

In case you haven't figured it out, not all of we Latinos are here illegally so telling any of us to get a green card or go back to where we came from is pretty damned hilarious. I'm actually a 4th gen Chicana with American Indian blood so I AM where I came from. Why don't you go back to Deutschland, Frau Whiner? If you don't like sharing space with those of us whose ancestors have actually been here longer than you maybe you're the one who should leave, que no?

Good life? really? I am a single mom of Gypsy origin, born and raised here, considered white. If we have the good life, then why am I struggling? Why did my late fiance have to be on state help? Why when I work my A** off do i still not seem to get anywhere? and why when i go to get state help, i get told I make too much money for a family of 3? yeah some GOOD life there. I could survive in mexico,.. the point is I DONT want to. And there is this. You say we shouldnt worry bout the bilingual thing. but if i go down there, or to any other country, i have to learn their language so why when you come here, dont you have to learn ours?

Are you from Romania or were you born in the US?

If you are born in the US then you are a United States citizen, in other words an American.

If you were born in Romania then you may have they claim to be ROMANI, If you are ROMANI then have you been NATURALIZED?If you are not naturalized then you deserve NO assistance.

If you are naturalized, then get a husband who has a good job and STFU and make him his dinner and pump out some more tax deductions.

I am a "gabacho" girl that did drugs and got pregnant. There was noone around to sympathize or make excuses for me. There was plenty of judgement and disdain. Please don't generalize.

You answered yourself she is a mexican (an ilegal living from our american government) while a gabacho (white american citizien) living from our government. There is a huge difference specially when people call then selfs mexicans first before being americans but they do live here, work here, and abuse the american tax payers. And Yes American Hereos come in all sizes, colors, anf forms, but one common factor they are American and proud of it. Keep this thought in mind, "An "immigrant" proudly flies the U.S. flag. An "invader" flies only his own.

We live in a society where we do not call names. Why does Gustavo Arellano think it is okay. To use the word Gabacho. Then it is also okay to go around insulting people of Mexican decent and African American decent or any race for that matter. I AM MEXICAN. I DID LIVE IN A MEXICAN TOWN, and I do not go around calling people names. Why? because in the words of Mexican President Benito Juárez "El respeto al derecho ajeno es la paz". In other words; "The respect of others rights is peace" So, New Times... If you are going to write and article called, "Ask a Mexican". Make sure you do just that. Ask a Mexican!!! Not just a wanna be.

i am an americanized mexican 3rd generation. i have gone to trade schools and have made a good living. leaving my wife at home ( who knows how to cook ) to raise our children.we live in a modest home and our children have advanced in life which makes us proud to be thier parents.it shows what a family who has 1 parent at home and 1 at work can do instead of both parents working and letting some one else raise thier kids.we can speak, write and work better than most caucasians.my daughter is almost 18 and is not pregnant, does not drink, smoke and has respect for older people.also volunteers at boys and girls club taking care of other peoples children who have 2 jobs trying to show everyone what they have while they still struggle to pay thier bills.as an american i proud of my country proud of my family who has risen from poverty, and proud of my mexican heritage.(even though i don't speak spanish well and don't intend to visit mexico.)

this column is complete horse shit. It really doesnt make sense. In the first sentance he says he is not mexican or from hispanic heritage, but in the second to the last paragraph he refers to his self as "this Mexican". Alls he does is cite opinion and does not backup one of his claims with fact. Really he is just another stupid mexican-american that is making excuses for his "people" to further their agenda.

YOU are a COMPLETE MORON.The Bolded sections are QUESTIONS asked by people from around the country and the NON bolded are the answers from the syndicated columnist.

So really in FACT you are a neo nazi race hating bigot who just proved that you are too stupid to understand a question and answer format with out Glen Beck telling you what it is.

Dave

Hey genius, it's a Q&A - people ask questions, which come first and are in bold, then the Mexican provides a response...hence the name of the column.

Some people have no business writing columns. Do your research buddy and you will find that Mexico is to blame for all of their people's problems (and now most of ours) whether they live here or there. They actually have a chance here to be successful on their own and you want us to coddle them......Do something for yourself. That's how this country came to be.

NewTimesIsGarbage

oh, want to know why we blame "her heritage"? Because your "heritage" accepts teen pregnancy with open arms, and even celebrates a teen becoming a "woman" (quinceanera) . What do you think is going to happen when you tell a 15 year that she is now a woman entering woman hood?!? Back in the day if a teen became pregnant is was frowned upon, Now, this "heritage" has no problem celebrating (throwing baby showers, "fiestas") when a child is pregnant. It seems that in the poorer (not all) hispanic community teen pregnancy is openly accepted.

Hmmm

Still wondering why the news times doesn't change their title to Liberal (and completely one sided, opinionated) times.
