A world premiere at Space 55

Tony Award-winning playwright Greg Kotis had a Broadway hit with Urinetown: The Musical, but he prefers low-budget shows to commercial theater. So it's fitting that Space 55 is the spot for the world premiere of his The Unhappiness Plays, a humorous collection of short works about the sometimes sad nature of human existence.

More About

This isn't Kotis' first time at the downtown community theater. His friend, The Unhappiness Plays director and Space 55 owner Bob Fisher, directed a couple of Kotis' works for the theater's 10-minute play festivals. They were so well-received that a whole night of Kotis work was conceived.

Fisher has known Kotis for 25 years and performed with him at Second City in Chicago, and he hopes locals support the show and the Valley’s growing theater scene. "If the Phoenix audience shows that they appreciate this kind of event happening in Phoenix,” says Fisher, “I know a few other playwrights, and I will put the squeeze on them!"

Thursdays-Saturdays. Starts: Jan. 20. Continues through Feb. 5, 2011
