Have a Ball

Exhibition celebrates an AZ institution

It seems like every November we swear off baseball for good, only to find ourselves excited four months later when the whole thing starts up again. This year’s respite between seasons is almost over. Pitchers and catchers reported last week, most teams’ first full workouts take place today, and from there it’s a scant six days until the Cactus League begins.

It’s probably just our love of warm weather, but the idea of baseball always seems fresh and exciting to us this time of year. If you’re like us, you’ll probably check out this year’s “Play Ball: The Cactus League Experience” exhibit at the Arizona Historical Society Museum at Papago Park. The show features photos and memorabilia commemorating one of Arizona’s finest and longest-running traditions.

The exhibit will have its grand opening at 10 a.m. Saturday, February 19, with guest appearances by Hank Aaron biographer Howard Bryant at noon and an autograph signing by D-Backs pitcher Armando Galarraga at 2 p.m.
