Tomb With a View
The official web site of the Lenin Mausoleum is pretty trippy. “The spruces have grown up. There is no red banner under the Kremlin. But the Mausoleum still exists,” it proclaims.
If you hurry, you can vote online to ensure the tomb’s continued existence. Or, you can do your part to preserve the deceased dictator’s memory by catching the Theatre Artists Studio production of Vern Thiessen’s Lenin’s Embalmers.
Theissen’s play is based on the weird quest of two Jewish scientists and Stalin insiders (Boris Zbarsky and Vladimir Vorobiev) to preserve Lenin’s body forever. Arrests, betrayals, biochemistry, The Gulag; it’s all in this dark comedy. The fruits of the real-life Zbarsky and Vorobiev’s labors are visible at Lenin’s mausoleum, as embalmers still pour fluid over the fallen leader every few days.
