Poetic Ending

All good things must come to an end: Big Love, Medicare benefits, the Phoenix Suns’ playoff hopes. And Black Pearl Poetry Slam, a weekly poetry competition created by Ohio transplant Ed Mabrey in 2009. With the local poetry schedule increasing to capacity, it was time for one major player to step aside. “There are about as many poetry shows in the Valley as there are days in the month,” quips Mabrey. “No matter how many cooks are in the kitchen spoiling the soup, you never hear of one offering to step aside for the good of the meal.” So Mabrey opted to close down his event, despite Black Pearl’s recent victory over other state teams at the Treetop Poetry Festival.
