When Emily Dickinson wrote, “I cannot dance upon my toes -- no man instructed me -- but oftentimes, among my mind, a glee possesseth me,” she must’ve been aware of the great irony that her words itself were a dance, practically leaping off and sashaying across the page.

Dickinson is one of the poets whose words are featured American Voices, a multimedia show created by Center Dance Ensemble to unite music and choreography with live readings from some of America’s best loved poets, including Charles Dickens, Dorothy Parker and Billy Collins. The Herberger Theater’s resident modern dance company is celebrating National Poetry Month with the production, which features 16 unique pieces that blur the line between the movement of feet and words.

The sounds and sights can be found at the KAX Stage at the Herberger Theater Center, 222 E. Monroe, on Saturday, April 23.

Sat., April 23, 2 & 5 p.m., 2011
