Wayne Michael Reich 05/13/2011 11:40:00 PM
Since this is New Times, I'm not too surprised if the "friend of a friend" approach is how stories are green-lighted in regards to the Arts and Cultural scenes of PHX.
As a professional artist, I have no problem whatsoever with using any connection you possess to further your career- I do have an issue when better and brighter talents are overlooked in favor of the reporter's friend/cousin/bed buddy/old college roommate, etc.
New Times is notorious in the Arts community for this sort of nepotism.
When they launched their Big Brains contest two years ago, they had to open their story archives to find some (not all) of those included on the list- this year they had to open their coffers and offer a 1000.00 bucks to garner attention from the Arts community.
I'm not against my fellow artists making a buck, but there were some glaring omissions from that list, and the Arts community know who was excluded and why.
(Stop frothing Tomato- I wasn't talking about me.)
While NT has increased it's Arts coverage (online anyway) the coverage and journalistic quality still fall way short of what's needed to help the PHX art scene in regards to it's exposure and financial stability.
Good luck with your gigs- may they increase tenfold.
respectfully,
Wayne Michael Reich

PS: Tomato? This is your cue- start proclaiming your toughness while attacking anonymously. You sexy fruit, you.

This is why I love you, Tomato.
You're fun.
That whole "hiding under the Internet's bed" thing is just drop dead sexy in my opinion.
No matter what everyone else says, I like the fact that you don't have the cojones to use your real name.
You're mysterious and cowardly, and that's just hot.
respectfully,

Blues AreThe Healer 05/10/2011 4:34:00 PM
To bad old Blues Man Willie Dixon is not still alive. he would do a better job than Johnny Dixon who ever he is. Johnny Dixon sounds more like a 1970s TV game show host. who ever he is.

Just Another Rider 05/09/2011 10:01:00 PM
Good luck finding quality local musicians in this dusty dirty boring sun drenched desert hellhole called the valley of skin cancer. this is a talentless city except for the {already made it} rock stars that live here in their big Million Dollar North Scottsdale and Paradise Valley Homes and Mansions. other than those guys there is no real talent here. this is not New York City,New Jersey, Atlanta , Los Angeles,Nashville Tennessee or the San Francisco area where real talent is found. even Denver Colorado has a way better music scene there than Phoenix Arizona. Phoenix is just a boring dusty sun drenched desert searching for a city and real music culture.

Wayne Michael Reich 05/08/2011 10:34:00 AM
Because it's New Times, and they could care less overall about the "local"- unless you're a friend of the reporter or a total kiss ass to the Managing Editor (Amy Silverman).
My guess is that ince they've slowly replaced real reporters with bloggers, their green as grass journalism school hire was probably too scared to walk into an actual biker bar, or any place that features actual musicians.
My advice for getting good local press?
Pick another paper.
The Pennysaver with Porn is not the way to go in this city.
However- you can clean your Harley's chrome with it.

The Artimus Pyle band played for free at the steel horse saloon at 19th ave and Bell road back in October of 2010. and who walks in the door and shows up to play with Artimus? none other than Greg Allman of the Allman Brothers Band. all this music was for free at a local biker bar. how come new times did not cover this free event and write a short story on it?
