Hot Mamma

Like it or not, jukebox musicals have become a staple of modern theatre. The undisputed dancing queen of said genre, which enjoyably grafts bombastic pop songs into narrative form, is most undoubtedly Mamma Mia!

For nearly a decade, the smash hit has dominated Broadway, with its cast of dozens bringing the oeuvre of ABBA to life via big, blustery dance numbers. Playwright Catherine Johnson wove the songs of the ‘70s Swedish popsters into the story of Sophie, a young Greek woman on the cusp of her wedding, who plots to have the father she never knew walk her down the aisle. Even without Maury Povich-style theatrics, the familial shenanigans sweep swiftly through the dancehall-approved songbook.
