College is usually a time for kids to go against the grain and rebel by getting a purple mohawk, or skip studying for an exam in favor of testing their drinking endurance skills. But the artists whose works are featured in ASU Night Gallerys exhibit, With the Grain, have passed that stage and are already masters of their craft.
The show features pieces by wood art program alumni and grad students including Jessie Herndon, Andrew Hadle, and Tania Radda. Damon McIntyres Tea for Two is a whimsical, undulating dining set that resembles something out of the musical Beauty and the Beast, while Raddas contribution pays tribute to the natural environment from which her material originates. Growing up in Brazil, I experienced up close the fascinating aspects of nature, Radda writes in her artists statement, and today I find that by sculpting these pieces, I can continue to explore and study these wonderful life forms.
Tuesdays-Sundays. Starts: May 5. Continues through May 29, 2011
