Short Shorts

A good play will keep you entertained long enough to put aside your troubles for an hour or two. A bad play, on the other hand, will leave you squirming in an uncomfortable, rickety, squeaky theater chair for what feels like a lifetime.

That’s why we’re thankful for Theatre Artists Studio’s 2011 Summer Shorts program. The show includes eight short plays, each lasting no longer than ten minutes, written and acted by studio members. This year’s selections, chosen from among twenty-two submissions, include “Chocolate Soufflé,” in which two friends divulge shocking secrets, and Debra Rich Gettleman’s “Salt,” a titillating triangle between two strangers and a slice of pie.

“What’s great about the shorts program is that it gives members who don’t normally consider themselves writers the chance to stretch and learn creatively in a new area,” says participating actress Julie Lee. Plus, if you don’t care for one of their writing styles, you’ll get relief in less time than it would take you to sneak out of the theatre in-between scene changes.

Thursdays-Saturdays, 7:30 p.m.; Sundays, 2 p.m. Starts: June 9. Continues through June 19, 2011
