Somewhere between the seemingly oblivious brilliance of indie quirkster Daniel Johnston and the meticulously calculated humor of Andy Kaufman lies the character that is Ryan Avery.

A consummate entertainer and performance artist, the 24-year-old is a skilled showman who offers amusement to anyone witnessing his antics, including his starring role as lead vocalist for his well known project, Fathers Day. Like the other members of the thrash-punk quartet, Avery satirizes bad daddies everywhere with his character “Business Dad,” a chauvinistic and racist blowhard who beats his kids and cheats on his wife.

With riotously brief songs that typically feature lyrics about domineering husbands and other patriarchal clichés, the band (which also includes “PTSD Dad,” “Single Dad,” and “Golf Dad”) will offer up a surreal and satirical spanking to daddy dearest at a special Father’s Day performance at the Trunk Space, 1506 Grand Avenue, on Sunday, June 20.

Sun., June 19, 8 p.m., 2011
