While more than 45 years have elapsed since Malcolm X was gunned down in cold blood in 1965, the famed civil rights leader is still a major topic of conversation. You can credit the newly published Malcolm X: A Life of Reinvention for that, as the epic biography by the late Columbia University scholar Marable Manning has stirred up renewed interest in the controversial figure.

Both the man and his mission of ending prejudice will be celebrated during the Malcolm X Festival at Phoenix’s George Washington Carver Museum and Cultural Center. An appearance by the Honorable King Otitribi, of the Baiki people of Ghana, will be the highlight of the event, which also offers performances of dance, poetry and music.

Sat., June 25, 11:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m., 2011
