"I'm stymied to come up with anything funnier than people who think animals have rights. Just stick an arrow through their lungs"; "Obama's a piece of shit, and I told him to suck on my machine gun"; "Our failure has been not to Nagasaki [Iraq]." To read some of the more controversial quotes attributed to Ted Nugent, one might think the Motor City Madman is all mouth and no heart. But a closer look at the Nuge's life reveals he's not such a hard-ass, after all. In 1999, he created the Ted Nugent Kamp for Kids, a nonprofit organization that gives underprivileged children the opportunity to camp and hunt with a rock star. He's staunchly anti-drug and serves as a spokesman for the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) program. He also frequently performs free shows for U.S. troops in the Middle East and established the Freedom's Angels Foundation to provide additional troop support. And he somehow still manages to tour and perform an unbelievable amount of shows (since he began touring in 1967, as a member of The Amboy Dukes, he's played more than 6,000 concerts). The best part about seeing Ted Nugent perform is that he's focused on playing music instead of delivering ultra-conservative lectures. So for at least one night, you have a chance to hear some great guitar playing in songs like "Cat Scratch Fever" and "Free-for-All," complete with loincloths and bonfires on stage, but sans right-wing rhetoric.
