Someone should really make a movie about the saga of The Wailers. This band — founded by reggae legends Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, and Bunny Wailer in 1963 — is the seminal reggae band, and its various members have influenced every style of reggae imaginable, from roots to rocksteady to dancehall to ska. And yet the band still toils in the shadow of the late Bob Marley, having survived epic personnel losses that make Lynyrd Skynyrd's band casualties seem small. Marley died of cancer in 1981, Tosh was murdered during a home invasion in 1987, drummer Carlton Barrett was shot to death the same year, and vocalist Junior Braithwaite was murdered in 1999. Of the original Wailers, only Bunny Wailer and Beverley Kelso remain — and neither is touring with the band's current incarnation. But the spirit of The Wailers is being kept alive by bassist Aston "Family Man" Barrett (brother of the late Carlton). In addition to having played with the Marley-era Wailers, Barrett is also a former member of Lee "Scratch" Perry's band, The Upsetters, and was a mentor to Robbie Shakespeare (of Sly & Robbie). In short, he's considered the man in terms of reggae bass playing, and though Marley, Tosh, and many of Barrett's former bandmates are gone, this Wailers show is your best chance to hear iconic bass lines in songs like "Get Up, Stand Up," "No Woman No Cry," and "Exodus," played by the man who wrote them.
