If imitation really is the greatest form of flattery, then having your portrait painted by an artist is akin to hero worship. That level of adoration is what inspired the group exhibit "Caras Amadas," which translates to "beloved faces" in Spanish, at Xico Gallery in Chandler.

The show features portraits of people who have inspired local Hispanic painters including April Edwards, Liz Guy, and Hugo Medina. The portrait theme may be simple, but the emotion conveyed in the art is complex. Guys painting Cruz is a photorealistic depiction of a rugged man in a straw cowboy hat, while Cristina Cardenas more whimsical works incorporate gold-leafed symbols and Incan-style figures. Whatever the style, the exhibit is a way for patrons to experience the strong and vibrant Hispanic art community through the eyes of its members.
