Cold War Kids @ Marquee Theatre

Once awash in blogosphere love, Cold War Kids have experienced a shift in buzz. The band's third album, Mine Is Yours, was supposed to launch them into the big time, breaking them through the way Kings of Leon's third album did for that band. Yet the record hasn't quite taken, and Cold War Kids remain what they were: a popular indie-band with aspirations to fill stadiums. It's tough to say why Mine Is Yours didn't click the way it was supposed to. Producer Jacquire King brought the same gloss he brought to previous success stories, including Norah Jones, Modest Mouse, and the aforementioned Kings, and frontman Nathan Wilett certainly stepped up to the plate for anthemic tunes "Louder Than Ever" and "Royal Blue." But somewhere along the line, the band seemed to lose touch with the bloodied-lip grit that made its debut, Robbers and Cowards, so enduring. The Kids just aren't cut out to be the Kings — and as it stands right now, it looks as though even Kings of Leon had trouble being Kings of Leon. Here's hoping Cold War Kids come back with an album number four that embraces their nasty, soulful tendencies. We'd hate to see them hung out to dry.
