Then theres this years Arizona Diamondbacks, who are incredibly likely to make the playoffs despite one of the least-expensive rosters in the entire MLB. Too bad we cant say the same for the Pittsburgh Pirates, who went from being contenders in July only to fade to pretender status as the summer dragged on. Although the D-Backs and Buccos combined salaries this season total less than that of the reigning World Series champion Giants, the Pirates carriage has indeed turned into a pumpkin while Arizona has an increasingly realistic shot at the pennant.
The D-Backs can help their cause this week by throwing a little more dirt on the Pirates grave during their series against the Buccos, which concludes with an afternoon game on Wednesday, September 21, at Chase Field, 401 East Jefferson Street.
