Media hype makes all fundamentalist Mormon men out to be pedophiles or players, while their women are cast as pitiable victims in dowdy dresses. In reality, most of the LDS community isnt down with the Big Love stereotypes.
I have lots of family members who would be extremely offended at the notion they were victims of any kind, says artist Rebecca Campbell, who grew up in a fundamentalist Mormon household in Utah. Her dreamy oil paintings are featured alongside the LDS-inspired sculptures of fellow artist Angela Ellsworth in Seeing is Believing, opening on Saturday, September 3, at Phoenix Art Museum, 1625 North Central Avenue.
In one of Campbells works titled Daddy Daughter Date, a teenager in a ruffled mini-dress waits patiently for her fathers etiquette lessons, his blank stare illuminated by the blue glow of a television set. The reality of my adolescent self was far from this façade, says Campbell. I was interested in having experiences that were quite dangerous and most definitely not within my fathers expectations of me.
