Material World

Some of us pay homage to rock gods. We plaster posters to our walls, wear band t-shirts and belt their songs at karaoke until our friends tell us to shut up. In Gary Paterson’s first-ever Arizona exhibit, the artist pays homage to a different sort of deity: Gods of art.

Paterson riffs on the techniques of some of the art world’s greats in “It Ain’t Necessarily Sewn,” curated by longtime New Times art critic Robrt Pela. Paterson takes Pollack’s splatters or Seurat’s dots, for instance, and uses their techniques to create something new – a geometric pattern inspired by stitch, needlepoint and quilting.

These textile-inspired paintings will be on display alongside some actual textile pieces by local artists Christy Puetz and Linda McCurry.
