Halloween Guide 2011

There's a little over two weeks left until Halloween, and the clock's ticking. If your costume ain't in order yet, you'd better get busy trying to conjure one. Forget about resorting to the ensemble of aviators, spiky hair, and a GTL shirt (since Jersey Shore was so last year), and instead consider the following: If you're going for nerdish reverence, a black turtleneck, blue jeans, and white sneakers are a good replication of the dearly departed Steve Jobs. Or consider going as Charlie Sheen (complete with Tiger Blood cocktail and some seven-gram rocks) or even Nicki Minaj (butt implants are a necessity). All of these are sure to earn you some instant cred, and maybe some cash, at any of the wild wingdings, costume parties, and other Halloween events taking place from Thursday, October 27, to Monday, October 31.

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 27

Details

DOWNTOWN ZOMBIE WALK
You'll have to pardon the pun, but the zombie trend just won't effing die. It's still stumbling along like an extra from a George Romero film, causing some to want to put a killshot though their own brains. If you're not one of these exasperated few who can't stand the sight of anything having to do with the undead, then head for the annual Zombie Walk on Saturday, October 29. This yearly event features hundreds of the supposedly undead clad in bloody makeup and ripped clothing while staggering around downtown Phoenix. It coincides with the "Halloween at Heritage Park" party, which runs from 2 to 10 p.m. The route begins and ends at 115 North Sixth Street, with the after party following. The lineup starts at 5:30 p.m. See www.downtownphoenix.com/zombie.

GHOSTBALL 2011
Got a costume you think is especially impressive? Beat feet over to Axis/Radius, 7340 East Indian Plaza in Scottsdale, for the Valley's longest-running (and arguably largest) Halloween soiree. If your ensemble is truly aces, judges will dole out some of the $10,000 in cash and prizes up for grabs for the winner of the block party's ultra-competitive costume contests. And believe us, the competition will be both cutthroat and creative (last year's winner was a ginormous 10-foot walking tree). Categories include best group, sexiest, and best overall. Pop-rock chart-toppers Hot Chelle Rae (known for their platinum-certified hit "Tonight Tonight") and house music duo 51Fifty will perform. Gates open at 8 p.m. Tickets are $24 pre-sale. See www.sletickets.com.

HAROLD'S HONKY TONK HALLOWEEN>
Roger Clyne's pretty big on the scary season. The local music legend not only digs zombie flicks, but he also has worn costumes during special All Hallows' Eve shows around the Valley (including dressing as Caesar and the Indian from the Village People a couple of years ago). Unsurprisingly, Clyne and his Peacemakers will be participating in the Halloween festivities at Harold's Cave Creek Corral, 6895 East Cave Creek Road, on Friday, October 28. RCPM will perform on the sawdust joint's outdoor stage during the party, where costumes are encouraged. After all, the band shouldn't be the only ones dressed for the occasion. Gates open at 8 p.m. General admission is $20-$35, VIP access is $45. Call 480-488-1906 or see www.ticketmaster.com.

SEAN WATSON's COSTUME BALL
Hipster spinster Sean Watson would prefer it if you came in costume to his Halloween event on Monday, October 31, at the lounge area of the Crescent Ballroom, 308 North Second Avenue. In fact, it's a prerequisite for entry into the affair. Watson's mandated that anyone without Halloween wear won't be admitted to his ball, which will also feature 2ToneDisco and Hunnycut spinning indie rock, glam, and lounge. If you're going for irony, try donning a fake bushy beard, wig, V-neck T-shirt, some Dickies shorts, and a pair of Vans and go as DJ Sean Watson. We're sure he'd dig that. The ball begins at 9 p.m. Admission is free. Call 602-716-2222.
