Guy fed up with phonies and frivolity falls for cute, phony, frivolous gal. We've got so many of that T-shirt, we're surprised Molière's stage comedy The Misanthrope wasn't about a musician from its 17th-century get-go. As it is, playwright Lauren Marshall painstakingly re-translated the French text several years back, preserving the rhyming-couplet structure but making it kind of seem to be about Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love.

This fall, though, the whole hot-tubbing, moshing shebang has gone from shoegaze to showmanship -- it's all about the metal. ASU School of Theatre and Film recruited Jason Steffen, who fronts local black-metal band Singularity, to compose and perform new music with Marshall's lyrics and star as hero/chump Alceste through Sunday, December 4 (with a T-giving break).
