Timothy B. Schmit @ The Compound Grill

Timothy B. Schmit always felt like "the new kid in town" in The Eagles, but that's because he pretty much is. Schmit played on only one pre-reunion Eagles record, The Long Run, but he made his presence known with the stellar, blue-eyed soul number, "I Can't Tell You Why." He's been a big part of The Eagles' occasional comeback records, but with Expando, his new album for Lost Highway, he proves that maybe the rest of the Eagles oughta listen to him a little more. The record is a varied trip down Americana lane, featuring guys like Keb' Mo,' The Blind Boys of Alabama, Kid Rock, Graham Nash, Dwight Yoakam, and Van Dyke Parks. With "Ella Jean," he proves that he's still got the falsetto thing down, while "Downtime" gently rocks. The record isn't perfect ("White Boy from Sacramento" sounds like it probably should have been left in the California town), but it's a solid, supremely mellow collection of country-tinged pop. And, hey, unlike that last Eagles joint, it isn't being sold exclusively in freaking Walmart.
