Just saw this movie. Mixed feelings about it.
Rooney Mara is terrific. But at 2 hours 38 minutes I have to say they left a lot out, compressed too many characters, compressed too many events. Made too many changes to the story line.
In that time they should have been able to tell more of the book. I know books and movies are unavoidably different, but so much detail was lost that many scenes do not make sense unless you have read the book and remember it quite well. People who have not read the books will be left wondering why they spent their money on this thing, it just is not knitted together by what got onto the screen.
So much of Blomkvist's love life is left out that the character is nonsensical at times.
Berger is barely explained, after being a major figure in the book.
You know, really good movies can be very long. Movie goers do not mind. Engage them, please them, they will sit for hours. This movie could have been under two hours for what they presented, or another hour if it were well done.
On the whole it is well made technically and artistically, good acting to be sure. But key characters are left, very possibly, on the cutting room floor. Key scenes as well.
If the other books are made into movies, perhaps a change of director would help. Or screenwriter.
