Built to Thrill

You can call Phoenix a land without culture, but beyond the strip malls and chain stores, our town is actually packed with history. As Phoenix looks for its place in the world, sometimes it takes artistic expression to clear up an identity crisis or an artistic eye to really capture the essence of living in this humble desert city.

More About

Jason Hill, longtime Valley resident and painter, knows he’s idealizing Phoenix in his scenescapes of landmarks such as the Westward Ho Hotel, Financial Center, and Sunnyslope Mountain, but maybe that’s exactly what Phoenix needs: a stunning look at what we normally take for granted.

In his latest exhibition, curated by longtime New Times art critic Robrt Pela, Hill applies Phoenix’s most beautiful and unappreciated spots with acrylic, giving them new life in “Jason Hill: Icons of Phoenix.”

See it during an artist reception at Willo North Gallery on Friday, January 6, starting at 6 p.m. The works will be on view through February 24 by appointment.

Fri., Jan. 6, 6 p.m.; Jan. 7-Feb. 24, 2012
