Clear away the tie-dyed shirts and Widespread Panic bootlegs. Though popular Tempe spot Sail Inn is known best for twirling, weed-addled jam-banders, things are going to get very metal this week, as the Arizona Local Rock Fest sweeps in, bringing acts with names like Flying Donkey Punch, Plagued Angel, and Genocaust with it. Yup. A far cry from the mellow jams of The Noodles. That doesn't mean that the hippies should stay away, though. Bands like Scattered Guts, with its stoner trash guitar work, and False Flag, with its fierce political ideology (sample song title: "Politicians Are a Bunch of Lying Cocksuckers"), might be more distorted, growly, and double-bass-drum-pounded than the typical fare at The Inn, but what's more freaky than expanding your musical horizons? Plus, now that we think about it, the Grateful Dead logo is pretty badass, with its bold colors, striking design, and that skeletal visage. You know, it actually looks kind of metal.
