Queen of Kings

Martin Luther King Jr. may have had the most famous dream of all time, but it was his widow, Coretta Scott King, who helped make it a reality. When she passed away in 2006, more than 15,000 people came to pay tribute to the woman who was the face of the civil rights movement.

“Her fight against AIDS, the creation of the King Center, and education on curbing gun violence°K is proof that one person can change the world,” says local actress Chanel Bragg, who portrays a Hurricane Katrina victim in Black Theatre Troupe’s production of A Song For Coretta, opening at Playhouse on the Park.

Penned by Atlanta writer Pearl Cleage, the play follows the personal lives of five fictional women from very different backgrounds who meet at Scott King’s funeral including Bragg’s character Mona Lisa Martin, who lives out of her car and brings a bottle of cheap bourbon to help make the trip bearable.
