New Year celebrations and resolutions aside, it’s about time we come to grips with the possibility that the Mayan calendar’s end means 2012 is the last year that Earth-as-we-know-it will exist. But instead of stocking up on Twinkies, water, and ammo in preparation for doomsday, perhaps embracing the Chinese symbol of power, the dragon, would be more helpful.

Coincidentally, that mythic creature is also the beast of honor this Chinese New Year and during Phoenix Chinese Week -- a celebration of Chinese culture. The three-day festival begins Friday, January 17, with lion and dragon dances, martial arts demonstrations, musical performances, shopping, crafts, and, of course, food. Visitors are welcomed to sample dozens of authentic Chinese cuisines.
