Portraying avid ren fair attendees as basement-dwelling Dungeons and Dragons aficionados who relish the opportunity to use their year-round neckbeards for a purpose is a little shortsighted. Maybe they do dress up, throw on cheap English accents, and use words like verily. Big deal. If we learned anything from the Paul Rudd comedy Role Models, it’s that cosplay is a blast if you get over yourself.

And here’s the thing: the Arizona Renaissance Festival has grown into something more than an annual geek meet up. There’s an artisan marketplace and plenty of food and wine, too. (Just try to get a regular patron to shut up about those tumescent turkey legs.) Plus, the fest boasts a near continuous lineup of musicians, magicians, and comedians performing on 12 stages, all before you get to see a real (fake) daily joust.
