Three-chord alternative isn't new, especially in Tempe. In the '90s, bands like The Refreshments and Gin Blossoms rode the style all the way to the major-label bank. Unfortunately for Darkness Dear Boy, they seem to be running a couple of decades behind. But the Tempe-based band, which just celebrated its year anniversary as a band at Long Wong's, says it's happy to live in modern Tempe. "There is a wonderful scene happening in Tempe [and] Long Wong's now, and we are just thrilled to be a part of it. There is a strong community of friends, fans, musicians, venues, and visionaries," says lead singer and guitarist Ted Organ. "It's a good time to be in music. I feel like the bands are all rooting for and supporting each other now. It's a different feel than it was a few years ago when it was more 'us versus you.'" It's true. There's no use living in the past. That is, unless it comes back and hits you right in the face. Darkness Dear Boy was recently approached to perform their biggest gig yet — opening for '90s sensations Candlebox at Peoria Sports Complex. On top of recording their sophomore effort, shooting a second music video, and some regional touring on the way, we can expect to hear more locally from the budding three-piece.
