Even the ancient Egyptians weren’t immune to the wrath of the pissed off paramour, at least according to Giuseppe Verdi’s AIDA. With performances through Sunday, March 11, the opera deals with the difficult choices faced by a captured Ethiopian princess, her Egyptian soldier lover, and the Pharaoh’s daughter, Amneris.
Arizona Opera’s production features sopranos Lisa Daltirus and Mary Elizabeth Williams in the title role, with tenor Arnold Rawls as the young commander. “Portraying the role of Aida is challenging to convey the slave that she is to Amneris while concealing the underlying fact that she is a princess,” says Daltirus. “[That] is what keeps her intriguing…”
