It’s widely accepted that there’s nothing new under the sun. Nowhere is that more true than the literary world, where countless authors have homaged, remixed, or flat-out stolen a unique concept or killer plotline for their own works.

To wit: When Suzanne Collins published her 2008 teenybopper tome The Hunger Games, critics noticed it’s premise was not unlike Koushun Takami’s groundbreaking novel Battle Royale (and Kinji Fukasaku’s subsequent film adaptation).
Collins pleaded innocence, claiming there’s no way her post-apocalyptic story of sequestered teenagers fighting to the death for a government-sponsored competition was ripped off from Takami’s dystopian tale of Japanese high schoolers forced to kill each other off on an isolated island as part of a government-mandated program. Uh-huh.
Spot the similarities when the monthly Cult Classic film series screens Battle Royale at Madcap Theatre on Friday (a.k.a. the same day The Hunger Games opens nationwide).
