Good Old War @ Crescent Ballroom

It's tough to be a fan of the portmanteau. Blending words is an art mastered by few keen wordsmiths, like Liz Lemon on 30 Rock with the word "snart." But for every "snart," there are dozens of "turduckens" and "Blaxploitations." Apparently, it's the nature of idiots and geniuses alike to want to smash words together, whether they make any sense or not. In comes Good Old War. The Philadelphia-based indie folk three-piece decided to take on the portmanteau and slap it directly in the mouth. Keith Goodwin, Tim Arnold, and Dan Schwartz are three people who blended their sounds into accessible, unpretentious folk music, so they might as well do the same with their name. Good. Old. War. Get it? No? (It's a smushed-together variation on their surnames.) It's that sort of wordplay that makes folk music what it is, and Good Old War has carried that tradition for the past four years. It's a short time in the time span of folk music, but three albums and one EP later, the introspective acoustic trio has produced a series of sing-alongs like "My Own Sinking Ship," "Coney Island" and, from their 2012 release, Come Back As Rain, "Amazing Eyes."
