It might come as a surprise to fans of Michael Ian Black’s comedic repertoire (whether Stella, The State, or countless appearances on Vh1’s I Love The ___ series) that Black’s latest book delivers less on the funny and more on the heartbreaking, uncomfortable, and ceaselessly self-deprecating.

Sure, he’s employed those feelings to get laughs before. Black has cultivated a tongue-in-cheek image of a an egomaniacal asshole with a penchant for describing himself as “very famous.”
But there’s nary a trace of that man in Black’s memoir You’re Not Doing It Right. Hell, the book’s subtitle reads, “tales of marriage, sex, death, and other humiliations.” He hasn’t gone all doom and gloom though. When we spoke with him about the book, Black said he’s at an all-time high, happy-wise. Phew.
