Volley-Hall

When Denver-based rockers Tennis serve up their breezy brand of pop at Crescent Ballroom, 308 North Second Avenue, their rackets ought to be perfectly strung to serve a serene brand of whoosh that's all their own. The husband-wife duo consisting of Alaina Moore and Patrick Riley released their first full length effort in 2011 after a seven-month nautical excursion. Cape Dory was understandably laden with seafaring metaphors, drenched in 'verb, and buoyed with hooks. With this year's Young And Old the duo enlisted The Black Keys' Patrick Carney to produce. Carney took care to preserve the band's whimsical tendencies while providing them with a grittier rhythmic backbone and a slightly less lo-fi-living-room vibe. However, the band's most refreshing attribute, their deference to the three-minute mantra, has shone through on both records, preferring the ace over the laborious volley.
