Animal Instincts

Yetis aren't exactly common main characters in children’s literature -- blame their bad rap on the many tales of their legendarily not-so-nice cousins, bigfoot and the abominable snowman. But with a few paintbrushes and a heartwarming storyline, local artist Jennifer Campbell and writer/filmmaker Troy Harris were determined to give the mythological creature a softer side.

More About

The two created Yeti Leaves Home, an illustrated children’s book, by hand. Harris wrote the tale and Campbell used watercolor and ink to capture the adventure of a yeti on his path to growing up.

The two successfully raised $5,000 to publish the book, and on May 11, Practical Art will host a free reception for the book and for 25 of Campbell’s yeti-themed watercolors, which will be on display through Thursday, May 31. The book will be available for $30, and snacks and refreshments will be served.

May 1-31, 9 a.m.; Fri., May 11, 7-9 p.m., 2012
