Never underestimate the power of a playwright’s imagination. Absurdist author Arthur Adamov was inspired by dreams, while a grungy dumpster-diver stoked the creative fires for modern writer Jessica Hagedorn.

Fledgling local playwright Maxx Carlisle-King’s The Emerald Lounge’s Rihannon grew out of a game he played when he was a child. “I used to set up my grandparents’ kitchen and living room to be the Emerald Lounge,” says the now-teenage performer. “Esmerelda, the nightclub’s owner, would serve the food… I would do all sorts of songs.”
Carlisle-King, as his drag persona Rihannon, will present the one-act play as part of Soul Invictus’ Summer of Soul #2, opening at 8 p.m. on Friday, July 13. The event also features Vermont playwright Ray Charles’ Wellington Café, a comedy that finds five people musing on life and love while sipping shakes.
