Ask a Mexican on Gabacho Whining and Mexicans in the Media

I'm a Mexican-American high school student, and just as patriotic as the Joneses who live next to me. In my neighborhood, a gabacho got mad when someone hung a Mexican flag and ended up cutting it down. I think this whole idea of putting one's flag up and another down seems pretty pointless to me. In my neighborhood (which happens to be predominantly white), people complain about everything — seriously, every damn thing. From calling the police to move my dad's 1989 beat-up Ford to spreading hate mail of who has the crappiest house. I guess my main question is, why do gabachos complain so damn much?!
No Soy Llorón

Are you kidding me? Gabachos were born complaining. From telling the Indians to give up their land to telling Mexico to give up their land to crying about illegal immigration and cars on the lawn, complaining is as crucial to the gabacho experience as fiesta is to the Mexican one. I wouldn't pay too much attention to all the whining, though: While the squeaky rueda gets the grease, eventually the wheel falls off — and the greaser remains.

I saw this quote the other day and thought it might be right up your alley: "The only Anglos who take an interest in us are the sociologists and the police." Do you know who uttered these words? Maybe it was just an inside joke among the teens in East L.A. during the 1970s? Do you know the phrase in Spanish, too? I'm thinking it could be more poetic in Spanish.

The closest quote I could find that matches the one you offer comes from Columbia University professor Rodolfo O. de la Garza, in his 1976 paper "Mexican Americans in the United States: The Evolution of a Relationship": "Like sociologists and educators, police have traditionally viewed Mexican Americans as inferior and crime prone." (The profe also includes this classic from J. Edgar Hoover: "You never have to bother about a president being shot by Puerto Ricans or Mexicans. They don't shoot very straight. But if they come at you with a knife, beware." Ha! He obviously didn't remember Rafael Cancel Miranda while wiretapping MLK.) I would expand the quote you mention to include reporters. Recently, gentle readers, the Mexican's hometown of Anaheim has made it into the national media — not because of Disneyland or the Anaheim Angels, but because of police shootings that left two Latinos dead and caused four nights of protests, one of which included the ugly spectacle of Anaheim police shooting pepper balls and bean bags into a crowd of terrified children and parents. The media is suddenly obsessed over the "two" Anaheims — white and Latino, as if it just sprung out of nowhere.

This is something that happens all the time with Mexicans. Media never gives a shit about us until we go crazy: Amnesty rallies, protests against police, cerveza gone wild, and the like. That's why it's crucial, Mexis, for us to become our own media. Start your blogs, get on Twitter and Facebook, take photos and videos, and document what we're really about (and always make sure to pick up your local alt-weekly and click on the online version of the Mexican a trillion times so we stay in business). That's what this columna has always been about — but the Mexican can't do it alone.

My apologies for the soapbox session, cabrones: back to your regularly scheduled chichis jokes next week! Now make like a Mexican, and raise desmadre.

Way to go! You successfully spread more hate propaganda. You're no better than the KKK's or Black Panthers or any other group set on dividing people and against each other. What wackjob publisher let this in Yahoo! News? It's the same in the 4 states I've lived in, where people have to spew their junk down my throat and expect me to say, "Oh geez, you're so right, I'M the raciest. Let me go around and apologize for my race everywhere I go"! You're as bad as a victim blaming everyone for individuals making choices. Should someone raped by another race blame that WHOLE race, or forgive and understand there are bad people everywhere of all races?

Why should I ask Mexicans anything?  Mexico is none of my business.  I'll ask Americans.  Oh, what is a gabacho?  Oh, never mind.  I don't care.

Per your rant:

If a LEGAL Immigrant, speak or learns the language & merges with the society it's a win win. If an ethnic group has their own internal society, own language/shops, own network, they will never learn the language or merge with the society. Why then even come hear. Go to a country that wants to morph into something else. America welcomes ALL immigrants but they must be LEGAL, otherwise they are a perversion of the society. & the law. Give me your address & keys so I can move into your house, eat your food, use your utilities, but don't ask me to take out the trash, ask permission, or honor your house rules. BTW, if you are a legal, are an American, speak the language & merges with the society, what's your problem. Be part of the fix not the propagator of the perversion.

You appear to be some what educated but that seems not to have quenched the use of derogatory or racist terms. Just can't get past it.you use the term " Gabachos" which is a ethnic reference/ pejorative/slurr ie: whitey/crackers/gringo/pale skin & more see: see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gabacho). Illegal is just that "illegal", no problem with any "legal". Are the police in China Town profiling if they stop a car & there's a Asian in the car.  If I go to France or Italy or germany I learn the language & meld with the society, not demand it to change. I honor my heritage but also honor the people I share community with.

PS- can someone explain the whole car on the lawn thing to me? Why use the lawn instead of the driveway? I can see if there is going to be lots of visitors for a party that day or something but to do so every single day and NEVER, ever use their own driveway or even the street curb in front of the home....that I don't get it!  Is it really just a Mexican thing or do others do it too and perhaps I have just not seen it before now? Help a white girl new to AZ out and fill me in please. Thanks!

I appreciate (even adore) many things about many cultures outside my own. I speak 3 languages and working on a 4th and I want to visit as many Nations as I can before my ultimate end. However, I do take issue with cars being left on lawns ( and double issue when someone parks on my property and does so without even asking first then gets furious when I politely ask them to move it - yes that actually happened to me personally ) but this complaint has nothing to with race or legal status. My issue with it is b/c it lowers property value of every single surrounding house. No big deal, if one lives miles away from their closest neighbor but otherwise it can make or break if a family can sell their home or get a reasonable priced offer for it and that my friends is selfish- regardless of who or what the offending party is... or is not.

First of all, jessee5545, George Lopez never said he would go meet the pig-headed sheriff.  Your statement implies that there was some mutual agreement or at least consent from Lopez.  Second, Lopez' time is perhaps too valuable to waste on that fool.  Third, learn how to write English and proofread your work.  Use "happened" instead of "happen."  You have the wrong verb tense.  Use an apostrophe rather than a comma for your contractions.  I am sure you can figure that one out without an example and correct the rest of your stupid grammar and punctuation errors.

Illiterate fools like you are giving Mexicans like me another job...correcting your grammar.

I,m just wondering what happen to big mouth George Lopez going to meet Sheriff Joe in person/ Too chicken chit maybe.

I no longer live in Phx, so I no longer have the happy time ability to read the New Times anymore, but occasionally I run across one of your articles while surfing the net. Everytime that I have the happy time to read one of your articles, I just sit back and shake my head. I can't make up my mind if you are the biggest racist ever, or just the most ignorant "Mexican writer" of all times. Before we get any further into this comment let me tell you that I am American born, 2nd generation here from Mexico, and  from a family of 11, grew up in Phoenix on the westside  and have dual citizenship with Mexico and  own a home both here in the states and in Mexico. Right now I have Mexican music playing on Pandora, and my American flag is flying outside, my Mexican flag is waiting it's turn, we rotate.  Next week I will go back to work at a grammer school in the states, working with special ed and special need kids. Whenever I read your articles ,I ask myself what the  %$#@# was he saying, is he for real? I get so tired of people labeling other people, or their beliefs and you have the propensity to do both.  I let my husband read this, and I told him, I am like Rodney King, "why can't we all get along".. I told him, I did my share .. "I married a white guy".... and his  answer was... " I did my share, I married a brown girl"....When I am in Mexico, I do everything that I can do to help anyone passing by my house, or anyone  that I encounter, in any circumstance that needs any help , right now my car is loaded to the top with toys for a forth coming  Chrismas party in Mexico in Dec . Last week, I worked at local school all week,  here in the states  to help them get ready for the opening day of school. We are all part of this earth, and we all need to help each other and get along with each other , if someone needs help we should not hesitate to help them out. My brother who is 72 works with the Angeles de Diesertos and goes out all the time all over the United Sates looking for deceased immigrants so that they  can be returned to their families for peace of  mind. You.... need to stand back and think before you submit  your writings, and.... before you spout such viciouse replies to your readers.

Yeah, Mexico stole New Spain like America stole New England...really, stop bitching and moaning.  Just because we have perfected the act of stealing with one hand and acting innocent with the other.  Crybabies!!

MesaMan

Many Mexicans seem to forget they stole what was New Spain from Spain yet still are upset over losing 1/2 of their country about 30 years later. Yet; where is the outrage against Guatemala telling Mexico to buzz off when THEY broke away in 1830?

It sucks to be the victim of racism yet I rarely hear American Indians complain about 'profiling'. Now; why is that since most North American Hispanics ARE Indian, whole or in part?

MesaMan
MesaMan

@justahuman Well stated. Yahoo has an agenda which is backfiring quite nicely as in increasing prejudice against stereotypical Hispanics or those Blacks/Anglo Whites/Asians/American Indians who look the part.

MesaMan
MesaMan

@dencarllc Agreed. 'Gabacho' is as derogatory as 'Beaner'.

MesaMan
MesaMan

@TaraAZ It's NOT a 'race' thing; it's a cultural thing. Really when one looks at it; Mexican illegal aliens are Poor White Trash/N words; they all have very similar values or the lack thereof, the difference is if an illegal gets picked up, he is likely to be deported..........otherwise there will be lots more crimes with those losers.

azcumsquelcher
azcumsquelcher

@Chicano_Loco hahaha you're so cool, chicano loco, showing off your mexican grammatical wizardry. Please teach us stupid 'gabachos' how to speak english!!! Plus, George Lopez is not funny at all. Neither is carlos mencia... I think you have to be Mexican to get over the fact that they are both terrible comedians

MesaMan
MesaMan

@Chicano_Loco You're so proud of being 'Mexican'. Such being the case; why don't you move there and help that pathetic dump fix itself up instead of criticizing the USA.

What? It;s nice to pat yourself on the back. Now let's get back to educating the Gabachos.

 @MesaMan

Because, MesaMan, American Indians have reservations they can run to go get away from racists like you.

MesaMan
MesaMan

@dorisjean23 This 'Gabacho' wants to see ALL illegal aliens and their minor age US born kids deported.

MesaMan
MesaMan

@dorisjean23 Using YOUR reasoning; so are Americans born in the USA.

Besides: there was NO 'Mexico' till 1810; it used to be known as New Spain.

azcumsquelcher
azcumsquelcher

@Truthhurts no one in their right mind would ever run off to a reservation to escape anything. If you've ever spent any time on one of our state's reservations, you've seen the poverty and deplorable conditions that exist there. Frankly, I would prefer Mexico over most of these places. And why must you call people racists when they haven't revealed any racial prejudice?

MesaMan
MesaMan

@Truthhurts Funny; several NON Rez Indians say things about Hispanics that'd embarrass the KKK.

Besides; where do you get the idea I'm a 'racist'? I just DON'T like illegal aliens and/or those who support them.

MesaMan
MesaMan

@azcumsquelcher  In all fairness: the Rez's outside of Phx are doing pretty well now as is the CRIT nation by Parker.

MesaMan
MesaMan

@azcumsquelcher  @Truthhurts It's called 'desperation' on the part of the illegal aliens and their fans: whip out the 'race card' when they're checkmated. The problem is the race card no longer works and people like me throw it back in the face of La Raza.
