Far East Movements

While the wily and costume-centric action-adventure films and television shows imported from Japan and Hong Kong (a.k.a. tokusatsu) may include subtitles or be dubbed in English, their best feature is how they communicate tales of valor in a language we can all understand: ass-kicking. Tokusatsu Theater focuses on a potpourri of punch-happy protagonists with Superhero Fisticuffs.

More About

It’s been just over a year since Tokusatsu Theater began hosting a monthly love-in for all things involving scale models of cities being destroyed. Starting out at the gone-too-soon east Valley grindhouse, The Royale, and then migrating to private residences, the Asian pop culture geek gathering emerged last month at indie movie bastion FilmBar, 815 North Second Street. Ultraman is likely the most well known of Japanese tokusatsu besides Godzilla (with whom he shares lineage thanks to Japanese entertainment producer Eiji Tsuburaya). The futuristic man in red and silver shares the screen with Kamen Rider and Tatakae! Dragon during the 21-plus event.
