At least as stupid as "Randall," a supposed former meth addict who claims in one of Arpaio's campaign commercials that she got straight in Joe's jails during one of several stints there.
"I thought my life was over," Randall tells us, as soft, syrupy music plays in the background. "But I enrolled in Sheriff Joe's drug-rehab program in Tent City. I got myself cleaned up, and I got my life back."
Then comes the line sure to cause nausea among the normal.
"I never thought I'd say this," smiles the woman, who looks like she may be in her late 20s. "But thank you, Sheriff Joe."
The 30-second ad ends with a shot of Arpaio, looking every one of his 80 years, with his arm around her.
I haven't spotted this one on the boob tube, yet. Only online.
Another one (which I have seen on TV) regales us with Arpaio's daring deeds as an agent with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. This, before becoming sheriff.
Oddly, these adventures include getting "kidnapped," according to the ad featuring Joe's bio.
Nor has Joe ever spoken of being kidnapped, as far as I can tell.
And as I reported in a recent item on my Feathered Bastard blog, ex-DEA honcho Phil Jordan, onetime head of the DEA's El Paso Intelligence Unit, says he wasn't buying Joe's bull, that he knew of all kidnappings of DEA agents. And an Arpaio kidnapping wasn't one of them.
But then, Joe's not one to let the truth get in the way of a good yarn.
The third Arpaio re-election spot I'm aware of features kiddies on swings, with Joe telling us how they are "da future" and need "strong families, good schools, and safe neighborhoods to thrive."
You'll note "freedom from child molesters" ain't on Joe's list of prerequisites. How could it be, when his office botched more than 400 sex crimes in El Mirage and elsewhere, many of them involving children who were raped repeatedly by their tormenters because the MCSO failed them?
But back to Randall, who, assuming she was a real inmate and isn't suffering from delayed Stockholm Syndrome, should have that space between her ears inspected for rocks.
Sorry. I'm happy if Randall kicked her habit. But her shilling for Arpaio is disingenuous on so many levels.
I can only hope she got paid for her nuzzling a sadistic creep like Arpaio, who brags about the cruel conditions in his jails and the fact that he feeds his dogs better than he feeds his inmates.
True to form, Arpaio's re-election campaign e-mailed the YouTube video of the Randall ad to prospective donors with an appeal for cash.
Seems $4 million-plus in his war chest isn't enough for this money-grubbing octogenarian. Maybe he's squeezed all he can out of the birther boneheads and now must go after the bleedin' hearts.
"A major part of my jail policies focus on helping those that are addicted to drugs," Arpaio lies in the fund-raising appeal. "The ALPHA programs in our jails continue to be a tremendous success in helping inmates fight their dependency on narcotics.
"This ad tells the story of a young woman named Randall who was addicted to meth, went to Tent City, and turned her life around after participating in the ALPHA program."
The truth is that the ALPHA drug-treatment program involves a very small percentage of inmates. The last published figures I found were for 2008. At that time, the program boasted 7,000 enrollees and 4,000 graduates in a span of 11 years.
Sounds impressive, at first. But according to a 2009 audit done of the MCSO by the county, the average daily population for MCSO jails in 2008 was running between 8,000 and 10,000 bodies per day.
Sure, the ALPHA program is great for those who qualify for it, but that's a drop in the proverbial bucket.
According to an MCSO brochure, the six-week course is for sentenced inmates. About 70 percent of those in county jails are pre-trial detainees, meaning they are awaiting trial or waiting to get bailed out.
And there's no getting around the fact that Arpaio's gulags are dangerous places, where it's not uncommon to die while you're doing that waiting.
In fact, you may not have to wait long. Marty Atencio didn't. The 44-year-old Army vet was mentally ill, off his meds, and wandering the streets not too far from where he lived when Phoenix police picked him up after his erratic behavior scared a woman last year.
He was taken to Arpaio's notorious Fourth Avenue Jail, where he was jumped by MCSO detention officers and Phoenix cops, Tased, beaten mercilessly, and left naked in a holding cell to die, as his jailers laughed and mocked him.
Atencio has a family that loved and misses him. His wrongful death now is the subject of a $20 million notice of claim, the precursor to another in a long line of jail-atrocity lawsuits against Arpaio.
As this newspaper has reported time and again, cruelty comes with a price tag. Over the two-decade span that Arpaio has been sheriff, wrongful deaths and other jail-related torts have cost taxpayers more than $50 million in legal fees, settlements, and awards.
In the case of Deborah Braillard's untimely demise, it's already cost the county $1.8 million in legal fees. And that was before the civil trial in Braillard v. Maricopa County began this month.
After it's over, it will cost us far more.
It cost Jennylee Braillard her mother and Jennylee's baby girl her grandma.
For four days, fellow inmates watched in horror as the 46-year-old Braillard, denied her insulin, slipped into a diabetic coma, as she moaned in pain, begged for help, vomited, and soiled herself repeatedly.
Other inmates demanded she be tended to, but the MCSO guards told them, "She's getting what she deserves," and, "This is jail . . . Get over it."
These goons, both male and female, thought Braillard was in withdrawal from a controlled substance. Never mind that she could have died that way, as well. But she wasn't coming off anything: Tests later showed she was drug-free.
By the time officials, spurred on by Braillard's daughter, moved her to the hospital, it was too late. Eighteen agonizing days later, her internal organs shut down and her body bloated by fluids, Braillard died, just as surely as if she'd been pummeled and Tased like Marty Atencio.
Just as Charles Agter, Scott Norberg, and Clint Yarbrough were offed in restraint chairs by MCSO thugs; just as Phillip Wilson and Brian Crenshaw were beaten to death, the former by members of the Aryan Brotherhood, the latter by MCSO guards.
I'm out of space before I'm out of names of those who were unfortunate enough to die in Arpaio's dungeons or his Tent City "concentration camp" (his words, not mine).
"Thank you, Sheriff Joe?" Please.

THIS IS WHY ARE LAWS ARE HARDER THAN OTHER STATES... DO YOU GET TRUTHSEEKER>>>
One U.S. Customs and Border Protection agent was killed and another wounded after they were shot early Tuesday while checking a motion sensor near the Arizona-Mexico border, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
A CBP official said that 30-year-old Nicholas Ivie died after the agents encountered gunfire around 1:50 a.m. near Naco.

SLIDESHOW: 4 men wanted by FBI in agent Brian Terry's death (7/9/12)
Both agents worked out of the Brian Terry station in the Tucson sector. The shooting occurred on State Route 80 about seven miles east of Bisbee, according to Carol Capas of the Cochise County Sheriff's Office, one of two investigating agencies.
The wounded agent was flown to a hospital with injuries to his lower extremities that were not life-threatening, according to Capas. A third agent in the area was not injured, Capas said.
Capas said the agents were walking up a hill to investigate the triggered sensor, indicating something that was moving across the area, when they took on the gunfire. Capas said it was not known if the agents returned fire but that they were able to radio in they were under fire.
The FBI and Cochise County Sheriff's Office are leading the investigation and search for suspects.
Terry was a U.S. Border Patrol agent killed in a December 2010 firefight with a group of armed Mexican bandits just north of the Arizona-Mexico border.
Two guns found at the scene were bought by a member of a gun smuggling ring that was being monitored in the government's botched gun smuggling probe known as Operation Fast and Furious.
It has been a devastating week for Cochise County law enforcement. Sheriff Larry Dever was killed in a one-car crash on Sept. 18 as he was headed to meet family in northern Arizona for a camping and hunting trip.
"You know we haven't completely processed today yet, but ... it's just been devastating for us," Capas said. "Our biggest concern right now is for the Border Patrol agents, their families and the people that they work with directly. Our hearts go out to them. We understand how difficult of a time this can be."
"You know, we have such a vast amount of land to cover from our department's standpoint with 86 sworn officers, and that includes our administration, Border Patrol is an integral part of assisting us whenever we need backup on any type of call that we have, specifically when we are in the remote areas," Capas said. "So it's very difficult for us right now."
I fed the fuel and was wondering how many fish i could hook....... Looks like i got my catch for a week! LOL.. It has been fun messing with you minds!
Wake up people. This is Arizona, leaders in torture, abuse and cruel and unusual punishment. Two decades of Arpaio's culture. What does this say about the "compassionate conservatives" Bush talked about that drive the state of Arizona? Hypocrites ALL. This film is disgusting. Arpaio should put this in his ads.

Sunbelt Justice: Arizona and the Transformation of American Punishment - Mona Lynch
"In the late 20th century, the United States experienced an incarceration explosion. Over the course of twenty years, the imprisonment rate quadrupled, and today more than than 1.5 million people are held in state and federal prisons. Arizona's Department of Corrections came of age just as this shift toward prison warehousing began, and soon led the pack in using punitive incarceration in response to crime. Sunbelt Justice looks at the development of Arizona's punishment politics, policies, and practices, and brings to light just how and why we have become a mass incarceration nation."
Accidental Felonsby Daniel Horne (wake up people this could happen to you)
Maricopa County is a place where first-time DUI offenders can find themselves facing thirty years in prison, where parents can find themselves woken up in the middle of the night, their bedroom filled with armed men and drawn guns, their home being invaded after the County Attorney suspects their child of viewing porn. The sheriff s challenger in the last election woke up one morning to find himself defending allegations that he had raped his mother. And, the prior County Attorney, a Conservative Republican, ran television ads asking people to vote for the Democratic challenger of the existing County Attorney.
Sheriff Joe Arpaio and County Attorney Andrew Thomas are the two most controversial lawmen in the United States today. They both reside in Maricopa County, Arizona, where their respective departments are fraught with lawsuits and investigations of wrongdoing all at taxpayer expense. Yet they remain defiant that their ultra-rightwing form of Western justice is what the American people want.
This story takes you through the heart-wrenching experience of one suburban family s tragic encounter with Maricopa County justice soon after having their second baby. It shows how the Maricopa County Prosecutor abuses mandatory minimum sentencing to manufacture violent criminals out of ordinary citizens, and it exposes the dangerous truth about Sheriff Arpaio s infamous Tent City found nowhere else."

"Arizona's prisons deadlier than most
by Bob Ortega - Jun. 5, 2012 11:18 PM The Republic | azcentral.com
"At least seven Arizona inmates have been murdered over the past two years, a prison-homicide rate more than double the national average, an Arizona Republic investigation shows.
The killings have occurred amid rising violence behind bars. Between fiscal 2009 and 2011, as the state's prison population rose by less than 6 percent, inmate-on-inmate assaults jumped 90 percent, to 1,478, and assaults on corrections staff rose 18 percent, to 362.
Arizona prison inmate deaths
The Republic investigation found two common threads in a majority of the killings: inmates housed with violent cell mates and inmates targeted by groups or gangs.
Among the victims was Eduardo Martinez, 51, who was beaten to death in the Yuma state prison in December, reportedly by the same men who six months earlier had assaulted him at the Florence state prison."
Oh i know her and her family.. She was bad looking.. I'm glad he picked her... The comments i read about her.... It proves you should do some back ground searching before speaking... Glad she got help by Joe! If you look at tent city.. there is a vacancy sign.. lol.. It like a hotel.. lol.. but this hotel keeps you tell you pay your dues! you get a choice in tent city. you can sit there do your time or choose Joe drug program.... I hate to say it.. there are other States that could use tent cities to.. it would cut the crime down a whole lot... I have no compassion for criminals.. all of you that do. Should remember.. For a fact all they are allowed by geneva convention.. Is a toothbrush, toilet paper, soap, and razor. Minimal medical.. time to treat them as such.. Criminals.. but we have boohoo bleeding heart liberals that have made it so inmates now get better Medical care ( organ transplants included ), better education, food, and yet they feel like their lives are hell.. then when they get out and can't get the luxury stuff they had in jail.. they do a harder crime so they get longer time.... they even get the top dental care who would want to live outside their.. when they want something they whine and congress and the bleeding hearts.. It's time to get tough... Screw the families that come here and are worried about there babies in jail here why did you come here to the USA.. because the Jails and prisons are ten times worse than are... We have spoiled prisoners in are country.. time to make their time hell.. Isn't that what jail and prison is for.. to make you never want to commit that crime again!
I graduated ALPHA in 2002 - Been clean and sober now for ten years. The tents is where I got my introduction to God and CA / AA, and it was in ALPHA where I actually realized the desparity of my adiction. I now am a religious volunteer at tent city and facilitate a church service there on Tuesdays. Further, I know MANY who have found recovery in the jails in Maricpoa County. I currently run a successful HVAC company in Phoenix, and I have been given a greater life than I could ever imagine. I can't say that the credit goes to Shreiff Joe, but instead to God, but he sure di use ol' Joe to save my butt! - I submit to you, Mr. Lemons, that perhaps you should do some research into the PEOPLE involved here. The program of custody support volunteers is Joe's program, but it is the people that volunteer that are making the impact. I find it insulting that you suggest that "Randall" may not ever have been an addict. If you would like to meet for lunch sometime, I would be happy to share my experience with you - and I have PROOF of bad it was for me then and how good it is for me now. If I were a journalist, I would jump at the chance to get some real insight into a story that interests me. I was an inmate therte for seven months, and I KNOW!
Joe does a job that none of the commentators are capable of. If you do not like him vote. But please keep your mouth shut about rumors you propagate.
For many, a stint in jail is required to get off drugs; often these addicts are truly grateful for being locked up as it results in getting their lives back.
And they wonder why businesses and people want to leave Arizona.... The power behind the media "puppets" Arizona's puppetiers put out there. Wake up people, you're being redirected, masking Arizona's reality -- a "prison" state. Who puts people into prison? The police / the prosecutors and bad lawyers and their team of enablers.
Locking up profits - Opinion - Al Jazeera English
well, even for old feeble joe these new ads are wading in deep bullshit....we already knew he was a liar and a blow hard and needs a shampoo, but geez you old pathetic creep you must really be feeling the heat from penzone, after all is this the same joe who said so many times he doesnt care what anyone thinks of him, he is DOING HIS JOB AS HE SEES FIT......remember this fellow voters, you cant always believe what Joe SAYS, but you can ALWAYS believe what Joe DOES....follow the money, ask the real question: Are you receiving good value for your tax dollars? Didnt think so.
Hey Machete wants to give you a bear hug too, Arpy. He told me he's looking for you. He said "if chu see Arpy tell him, MACHETE, MACHETE, MACHETE!"
Oh, boy, you comsoclibprogs are at it again. Being on the side of criminals, you have to scream at their nemesis. Sheriff Joe's my guy. You go, Joe!
Just when you think Arpaio cannot get anymore disgusting, he tops all his other nonsense. Surely there is some 51% in Maricopa County that can see thru his crapola?
The people have spoken at the ballot box for 6 elections now. They say the same thing. Joe Arpiao. I think some folks have seen the light and turned themselves around after going through the Maricopa County Jail, there are programs for inmates who want to change.
It should be remembered, no one is in jail for singing to loud in church. Some folks hit rock bottom, go to jail and turn it around. Others are repeat customers by their own admission. Inmates like most people are not perfect, they make mistakes, some people learn from their mistakes when a better way is shown. Sometimes that occurs in jail.
I am disappointed that the federal government spent 4 years and countless millions of dollars on an investigation that went no-where. There final report seems to lay waste to all the folks who were ready to crucify MCSO
Joe Arpiao, may not be perfect, but he exists by the popular will and vote of the people.
Will the Clown Sheriff agree to a debate in this election? He can get Russ Pearce and Candy Thomas as his "practice" debaters, as neither have jobs, thanks in part to Joke himself!
Arpaio has created jobs for lawyers, who he has made obscenely rich. Why would any of them want to stop the gravy train?
i love how his tent city ad claims "most citys let criminals out if their jails are too full, i dont do that" YET ANOTHER LIE!!!!!! name me one city that does that, and i want proof!!! thats all this man does is LIE!!
@pp_sheeba The Border Patrol agents shot each other. It's tragic, but there were no Mexicans involved.
@truthseekeraz Arpiao still leads the way in the abuse, torture, neglect, and summary execution of it's inmates, many of them not convicted. Anyone who has any kind of medical condition that is medicine dependent can pretty much count on getting your final affairs in order before going into Arpaio's jail,as there is a chance that they may decide to neglect you to death. They have not changed policy one since the documentary, and continue using the chair, including the torturous practice of sitting the inmate down, then leaning the inmate forward so the inmate can no longer breathe.Sadly Arpiao will win the next election, and everyone who voted for Arpiao will love him until he executes one of their relatives, probably for a minor traffic offense or shoplifting.
@pp_sheeba You might want to keep in mind that you don't necessarily have to commit a crime to end up in Joe's correctional system. Just fall in his bad side, or get profiled by his deputies, and you can find yourself in his jail, and if the conditions are right, you can find yourself on his execution list. It is one thing to be detained awaiting conviction or sentencing. It is another to be executed for shoplifting. If you take issue with my statement about being executed for shoplifting, might want to take a look. Inmates who were awaiting appearance before a judge have ended up dead before a judge even adjudicated the case.
The U.S. is the #1 Jailer in the world. The only one with the barbaric Death Penalty of the civilized nations. The death rate of inmates in Arizona has more than doubled under this governor and ADC director. Unnecessary deaths that will result in wrongful death lawsuits that will waste millions of tax $$'s. Your tax $$'s? Don't believe you are a taxpayer anyone with your ignorant comment.
@twelvestepreaper wrong. wasting millions of taxpayer $$'s when they need treatment NOT costly incarceration ($$'s for the profiteers -- pink underwear, vending machines, inmate collect calls, bobble heads, armored tanks, luxury Penthouse offices in the Wells Fargo Bank building underwriting the private prison corporations and on and on.
Because someone opposes the unprofessional, corrupt, and criminal behavior of the MCSO shurf you deem them to "being on the side of criminals"? Hmmmm... you must be a posse member waiting on your knees in line for a promotion to "Hawaiian Detective", that newest rank accorded to those with the strongest ability to defy gravity....
@ReggieVV Sadly the only people who vote in maricopa county are the old people. I suppose we will continue to vote him in til the nasty creep dies....
@godhatesdems Genesis 1:27, "So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them"
Sometimes a child gets molested, then the sheriff redirects investigators to getting after brown people instead of helping that child, and the child is left to fend for him or herself. Somtimes that happens over 400 times. But that's OK with you, right? You still would say he's doing a fine job. Joe's got the child molester vote locked up, that's for sure.
@andre-leonardHe's been elected five times, dummy.
No, he won't 'debate'. He only talks TO people, not with people. He also has no depth of knowledge upon which to rely should he actually have to think about a cogent question presented to him and other candidates. Such as, "What can be done to use monetary and human resources better within MCSO so as to put more officers and deputies in positions where they can be most effective"?
His answer would simply be, "I don't recall".
And you comsoclibprogs call names because you have no cogent argument.
Zigs, other jurisdictions allow reduced sentences at the direction of the courts and the ciy and county jails must comply. The Maricopa Superior Court has the authority to do so, as well, but may be intimidated by the shurf since MCSO realizes some serious money from state and federal funding for each person per day who is being held in our jails in Maricopa County. The old man is seriously mentally ill and applies his own brand and definition of "law" as he sees fit. It's well past time for him to stain his dentures with the grass from his favority pasture, in Massachusetts. If they will let him in, without credentials of course.
@danzigsdaddy His TV ad is deceptive and misleading, in that it shows inmates in "orange" state issue -- that California state prisoners wear. Maricopa County jail detainees and inmates wear black and white stripes with pink underwear showing through. So is aPaio creating "fear" with the "orange" since he's turned the black and white stripes look into a South Park cartoon?
@danzigsdaddy I hate Arpio with a passion but other states do this on a regular basis, it's well documented. But yes he is a liar and a criminal and should be on the other side of the bars.
@errolmcinnes Well informed comment that rings true. Everyone dies at some time. When you're in your 80's if you care about your family more than your "job", then it's time to smell the roses and enjoy his "empire". He'll probably die on the job -- an appropriate ending for a narcissist protecting his domain that no one has been able to see.
@Tommy_Collins true tommy, it comes into play AT sentencing. if they are overcrowded they will hand out a 5 month sentence instead of a 6 or 7 month sentence, and i have seen it happening here. but the way i am seeing the commercial, he is implying that if they are overcrowded they will let a guy with a 7 month sentence walk after only doing 4 or 5. and that is something i have never heard of. there are certain programs that will allow a somewhat earlier release like a prison early release credit or temporary release credit. but these only come into play if certain criteria are met and if it is allowed in the sentencing report. county jail (here) has day-served-day-earned, that relies on "if you are working, if you you have no write ups, if sentencing allows it" as some of the criteria. another would be ALPHA itself and only if sentencing allows it and you meet the criteria. its just another sneaky half story by him to scare people into thinking the streets will be flooded with people who werent supposed to be released. jail or prison cannot change what sentence was meted out. i think its called the truth in sentencing law
@errolmcinnes What goes around, comes around.... ask andrew thomas, lisa aubuchon, rachel alexander, hendershott, russell pearce, lester pearce, joel fox, ...black and on and on with bigger fish in the pipeline. They are all so power hungry and narcissist they are all self destructing in front of eyes, unfortunately taking the people and the state of Arizona, they care nothing about. Why? They are carpetbaggers with their hands out for Federal $$'s = corporate and government welfare for the "public servants". Self-destruction for all.
@pp_sheeba The facts are in the links through-out this blog. You need to read the books and articles filled with fact. This is NOT a Third World dictatorship and its time to get rid of "torture" in America -- a civilized nation? Arizona is not a civilized state and it needs to be brought into the 21st century, starting with the ousting of the Maricopa County Sheriff "little, big man with a badge" and millions of $$'s to crush whoever crosses his path.
@pp_sheeba I must have hit the bull's eye with the truth, to receive your rabid response. Educated in Arizona?
A child-rapist who stays one step ahead of the police does not have the police's endorsement of his conduct, so too you can't say the DoJ sustained Arpaio behavior, especially considering they are still chasing him for civil remedies.
Try being honest for a change, it does wonders for your soul.
