Ask a Mexican on the Gabacho Ego and Columbus Day

Why do gabachos always feel the need to talk about money or trips they have taken? I always notice this when I am at any restaurant, like they don't have nada más de que hablar. They make a point to speak loudly for everybody to hear . . . especially if there is raza near by.
La Prieta

Since this is ¡Ask a Mexican! and not ¡Ask a Gabacho!, I'll turn the columna over to what passes for ¡Ask a Gabacho! in los Estados United — not Fox News, but rather Christian Lander. He's a Canadian (which means he's not technically a gabacho, but we'll deem him as such until we turn him into a Mexican) and author of the hilarious book Stuff White People Like, which is the ¡Ask a Mexican! of the gabacho world, except far funnier and less profane. Go for it, Christian!

"White people believe that taking a trip somewhere automatically makes them interesting — this is especially pronounced in white people under 25. If you are Mexican and a white person asks you about your heritage, be careful: This is usually their way of trying to move the conversation toward a trip they took to Central or South America. Unless it's a Republican white person, in which case they are trying to figure out if you are here illegally.

"In terms of money, one of the more interesting things about white people is that none of them consider themselves to be rich. Even those making six or seven figures consider themselves to be middle class. Ask Ann Romney.

"Finally, I don't want to poke a hole in your observations, because they have been quite astute, but white people do not modulate the volume of their voice for any particular race. We speak this loudly because we just want everyone to know that we're interesting, cultured people . . . or we're just self-absorbed. Either way, whether you want to or not, you're going to hear about my trip to Mexico City."

Gracias, Christian! Behold the future of America, folks: Canadians working with Mexicans to ridicule ustedes . . . va ser fun!

Please tell me why Mexicans boycott Columbus Day? Columbus is not responsible for the influx of Europeans to the New World. According to history, Columbus never set foot on American soil. The invasion of the Spanish into Mexico, then moving into the United States, caused the demise of Natives. What is interesting is Columbus received the funds for the voyage from the Crown of Spain. Anyone with a Spanish surname has roots from Spain. It appears today's Latinos are protesting against their history or ancestors when joining with Natives. It is ironic that the Hispanic flag features three crosses, signifying Columbus' ships, the Niña, Pinta, and the Santa Maria.
The Crypto-Cabrón

Mexicans can't boycott Columbus Day because they don't celebrate it. On October 12, Mexico and the rest of Latin America celebrates El Día de la Raza (The Day of La Raza), which isn't meant to commemorate any single race but rather the mestizaje that occurred after Columbus. It's surely a more positive way to celebrate the contact between the Old and New World than commemorating a cruel pendejo who didn't discover mierda, who tortured the indigenous blah blah blah. Also? I had to Google the "Hispanic" flag you mentioned to remind myself of it; it's about as relevant to the Mexican experience as the condom.

I don't know who's writing this article - and sarcasm aside - but I hope you lose your job when New Times is sold - which I understand, is to take place here shortly. You have managed to insult people from every Spanish speaking country in the world! Is this because you're a badly educated American? Possibly. But here's a bit of info: Columbus was Italian, not a Spaniard. Los Reyes Catolicos financed his trips to Los Americas. The voyages departed from Portugal. He was the first to bring Jews to America (engineers, navigators etc aboard his ships) who were escaping the Inquisition. His commission was to bring spices back from the east. Don't forget, in those days, everyone thought - or more correctly, the catholic church thought, that beyond the Gates of Hercules (straights of Gibraltar) the earth was flat. They literally, got lost at sea and ended up in what we know today as the Caribbean. Although, I have never understood how sailing west could be considered a shorter way to the east - especially if you believed the earth was flat - Hmmmm! But then - those were the days of exploration. It was the Spaniards, on behalf of the catholic church that killed, maimed, destroyed and pillaged in the name of god and greed - as they have done since the crusades - NOT Columbus - or Cristobal Colon, which is his real name. Columbus spoke of gold and other treasures to Isabel and Ferdinand so that they would continue to pay for his trips. This Dia de la Raza and hispanic flag are things I have never heard of when referencing Columbus Day. If you got your info from Wikipedia - well - that info is just plain old wrong! Anyone can go into Wikipedia and write what they want and it appears that is what some ignoramus has done.

"On October 12, Mexico and the rest of Latin America celebrates El Día de la Raza (The Day of La Raza)" I have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. I am a Caucasian citizen of Uruguay, South America, which I suppose, in your eyes, makes me a Latino? I wouldn't know, because in my country, if we ever feel the need to differentiate ourselves in any way, we don't refer to ourselves as Latinos or Hispanics, which is a purely U.S. term, but rather from the many European nations from which we originated. There is no "dia de la raza" where I come from, because we are mostly Caucasian - about 92%. You need to educate yourself on the fact that just as not every English-speaking person is American, not every Spanish-speaking person is Mexican. So please stop writing as if you represent the entire Spanish-speaking world. You do not speak for me or my nation, or many others in South America. While I'm sure the Mexican people are an interesting group with a rich cultural history, we have very little in common with you except perhaps a form of spoken language; and really, not even that, as I can barely understand the Mexican dialects I hear in Arizona, and I know they can barely understand my form of Spanish as well. You accomplish nothing in your attempt to give an illusion of strength by numbers in claiming nations that have no real connection to yours, except to make yourself look like a payaso (clown). I guess that word does translate.

New Times Has been writing their own.. crap for awhile...  Ask the minority how they feel.... oh yaa Mexican are no longer Minority anymore They out number Blacks and whites.. by millions and most are illegal so why should we ask them anything.. start asking the Minority how the seeing how mexicans aren't minorities lets start changing are articles to match the times and not the bleeding heart latinos that have no idea that they have over breed and brought to many of their families here. to the point that america is struggling..  we have the highest number of illegal latinos, asians, and Indonseians  than white and blacks put together.. they are more worried about educating the ones that are from other countries that are people are now consider lowest in education and poorest in health.. So we educate them, give them nice homes, we teach them professions.. i have been treated  badly myself.. my daughters have been turned down by public schools for the simplest thing.. they asked      one question.. does she speak english... I said yess.. they said she could not go their.. A PUBLIC SCHOOL>>>> what is wrong with this picture.. so we went by the school.. It was nothing but non--speeking mexicans.. All the white, black, asian, indian, and anything that wasn't hispanic was bused 20 minutes away versus school thats 3 minutes from are house..  Before you write articles that  favor mexicans you might want to learn More facts before you speak..... And yes i live in little mexico as me and my neighbors call it.. we love are neighborhood.. but even the mexicans agreed with me.. your articles are out there......And way out of touch with the real people.... Get away from the downtown rich social people when you ask question go where it counts.. lol.. down in neighborhoods like are over here by the county hospital..... Come talk to the people that really care....  yes im mad..  i have friends of all races but your article only shows the bias mostly...

You look for the bad in everything.. This is why are world is going to hell in a hand basket..... If you didn't crap that would make each other hate.... we would be a little happier.. but happy stories don't crap, hate and bullshit sells.. this is what you built NEW TIMES ON!

I would imagine anyone of "hispanic" background would hate that word because it insultingly lumps all nations and cultures as one - although we are all human beings, are we not? If you were to call all French - Spaniards, or Italians - Greeks, or even Irish - English - you would have a veritable uprising. So stop with the ignorance, pendejo! People of Mexican heritage in American are Americans - aren't they? And if there had been no Mexican American war - the border would have been further north - and Mexicans would still be coming to America. Why? Because who the hell wants to live in Mexico - except people running from the law! And it's the same anywhere in the world where countries share borders. The grass is always greener blah blah blah. This is nothing new. I am a naturalized American - from Europe, having been to over 40 countries in the world, but I gotta admit  that Americans do talk in loud voices and think because they've visited somewhere that they're unique - when in fact they come off particularly shallow - in comparison with people from other countries. I am never one to  judge an entire people by a few, but having had direct and prolonged contact with Middle Easterners - now know why nothing good comes out of that part of the world. My experience with real Mexicans (not Americans of Mexican descent,) is that they are hard working, decent people who have a national penchant for altering the truth, or lying- like Middle Easteners! And Mexicans, like ME's will always have my disdain as long as it rebukes half it's brain power (that is, women).

It's funny to me how all of you don't care about Mexicans but yet you still read an article called "Ask a Mexican".  Also, get off your sister for a bit and look up the word "sarcasm", you might better understand this column.

@Mexicanssuckmycock You're correct. If an Anglo White posted similar stuff slamming Mestizo Hispanics; the uproar would be all over the Internet. It's as if Yahoo et al post links to this stuff since the 'look down' on Mexicans.

It all comes down to civilized or uncivilized.  The "white people" brought civilization wherever they traveled.  While Europe was building massive cities, castles, roads and bridges the uncivilized where where still trying to figure out how to pick fleas out of their hair!!  It's really sickening that a still inferior race of people would try to change history.  Oh well, if it gets them through the day.

MesaMan
MesaMan

@USAROCKSMEXICOSUCKS In all fairness; the Mayans did have some civilizations comparable to the ancient Greeks but, again like the Greek's (Athens and Sparta) they squabbled and were eventually taken down by the Hispanics (Spaniards)

Too; the Aztecs did things that would be considered atrocities i.e. cutting out the still beating hearts of their victims................that sirt of stuff was going on before Columbus or Cortez.

What a joke there: had it NOT been for the White man, there's be NO Mexico. Besides; Hispanic culture IS a 'White" culture. Spain is White.
