Lacey likens his and Larkin's Backpage battles to ones fought by late literary publisher Barney Rosset, "who spent his entire life fighting for the right to publicize adult content." Lacey stresses that the ads on Backpage are protected by the First Amendment.

To Backpage's detractors, he says, "We'll see you in the courthouse."

New Times and the other newspapers in the chain still will pursue quality journalism, just as they always have, under the new company, Tobias stresses.

Larkin (left) and Lacey are leaving to helm Backpage.com.

"I've worked with Jim and Mike for almost 20 years," says Tobias, who started with the company in 1993. "The bars they've set will be the bars we'll continue to set — and try to raise."

Tobias notes that the papers are "iconic brands with long ties to their communities. We look forward to many, many more years of representing everything there is to do in these communities, and of producing award-winning journalism."

What a bunch of self-serving, flatulent bullcrap ! Does anyone expect The New Times flagship rag to run an honest editorial on Mike Lacey ? Your paper here in SF is ridiculous. They are much fairer about printing dissident rightists than Big Bruce's nasty Bay Guardian or the East Bay Express, which is going to renamed The Gammon Gazette because one ultra-leftist behind writes 90% of the copy. Even on Arpaio you guys have gone way over the edge. Joe has a great program for animal abusers that ought to be adopted nationwide. I don't agree with most of his policies but I wouldn't expect fair reporting on him by New Times. The aptly named Lemons falsely smeared David Irving as a holocaust revisionist years ago. As a secular Jew (Mom's side) I think the revisionists are on to something. I lived in Tel Aviv for two years and saw how Shoah Business has become a huge racket.

But Irving is no revisionist here.

Frankly the whole PC braindead Left is boring. When The Big O is reelected and the economy sinks this time the blame will fall on the Left and the Dems.

IMO Mike sold out years ago.  Back when he, Jana and Bob were knocking it out in the old San Carlos hotel... THEN it was a paper.  Now it's just another generic rag, indistinguishable from any other 'alternative' paper in any other city.  Only the names change.

Were it not for Freight Sales (now Audio Express) I wonder if the paper would have lasted a year.

Glad you were able to make a few bucks at it.  Enjoy whatever life brings you next.

I hope pig-head Joe doesn't buy Phoenix New Times, he'd fill the pages with white-power KKK propaganda, you'd see racist jokes, maybe an "Ask Babeau" love advise column, more stupid mug-shots, pictures of him kissing & hugging crack-heads & dogs, some Macayo's, & gun shop commercials.

Those of us Arizonans with brains are forever indebted to you guys. As was said, you opened a lot of eyes to the shite being shoveled by the powers that be in our formerly (and still to a certain degree) backwards state. You have dragged us kicking and screaming (see browndwarfz comments) into the present day. Best of luck to you two in your future endeavors. Thank you!

Thank God for New Times in this desert wasteland. Lacey and Larkin will be missed, but the folks at NT will carry on.

Good luck Mr. Lacey and Mr. Larkin.

Thank you for opening my eyes to the horrors of the MCSO shurf, Candy Andy Thomas, and all the other corrupt slimeballs we call politicians in this state.

Also thank you for standing up for your beliefs and for protecting and defending the Constitution of the United States from all enemies, foreign and domestic.

@truthseekeraz Not a troll at all.  Just a very longtime valley resident who has seen what happened to a once-great alternative paper.  Like almost all of his generation, for all their talk about changing the world and making it better- in the end Mr. Lacey and Mr. Larkin sold out their ideals for the dollar bill.  Sad really.  I liked Mike and Jim way back when I was young pup hanging around the NT offices and thinking about a career in journalism.

No trolling here. Just an old man who has a bunch of life experience and knows that in the end, the dollar always wins.  Always.

Good day sir or madam.
